John McAfee of Afton died at his home last Monday after a long illness in his 79th year. Funeral will be held Wednesday from the Afton church with burial at Williamsburg. Survived by a son Clarence McAfee of Tampa Florida and a daughter Mrs Ernest Meek. Wife died last fall after paralytic strokes.

A 60 foot tall maple on Main Street Batavia in front of P F Jamieson's home collapsed in Friday night wind. secured by Milton Jamieson about 80 years ago the tree shaded locals including Wm McKinley W J Bryan James Campbell James Cox and Robert Ingersoll. It measured 60 feet high with a 150 foot spread and 11 foot base circumference, yielding about ten cords of stove wood.

Thomas Daugherty of near Owensville died Monday night at Dr. W E Leever’s home after a long illness. Aged two years the obituary notes his wife died months earlier. He was a respected Stonelick township farmer, flower lover, and active in the home bank and Building and Loan Association. He leaves no family.

Two Farmers Sentenced to Ohio Penitentiary
William H. Barker of Batavia township aged 82 and Chas Merice of Union township about 45 were convicted for multiple prohibition violations. Each received from one to five years in the Ohio Penitentiary and fines ranging from $400 to $500. Barker faced a pending $1000 Dow Liquor Tax suit. Barker’s pardon petition to Governor Donahey was denied. Deputies escorted the prisoners to prison.
