Windbreaks Improve Woodland Border Planting

Forestry expert W. R. Anderson of the Ohio Agriculture Experiment Station explains windbreaks of evergreens just beyond farm woodlot borders reduce winter winds and moisture loss for seedlings. He notes old trees decline without sun, pines fail under shade, and a windbreak boosts vigor, seedling growth, leaf mold, sugar-bush sap, and wildlife habitat. A 20 to 30 foot border, with weed trees and vines, aids development, while multiflora rose may help if planted outside the woods edge.
