The Vesta Club of Williamsburg held an open house at Mrs. C. L. Chatterton’s home on New Year’s Day. About nine callers visited in the afternoon and evening. Ruth Moyer of Cincinnati read and Jessie Bechtold and Frances Dillman of Huntington provided piano duets. Frances Dillman, only thirteen, played three selections with noted touch. Chocolate, wafers, mints, and bonbons were served, marking a pleasant start to 1924.
The Clermont Common Pleas October term 1923 began Monday October 2, 1923 and continued to Friday January 4, 1924. Civil actions filed 119, disposed 68, pending 96. Cincinnatians fined for liquor law violations by Ralph Kinney in the New Liquor court. The list names Louis Schultz Paul Willmon Charles Jenhotter Carl Mecklenburg Allan Sexton Mil Rickert Clarence Lewis John Tyson Theodore Sinker John Trehanes Hartman and others with fines ranging from 100 to 600 dollars. Latter charged with resisting federal agents during a raid. Batavia may soon have a liquor court as Mayor Scott of Milford retires.
Georgetown Ohio December 31 hearing set before Common Pleas Judge Tarbell on motion to strike from the petition portions relating to the binding contract with the Burley Tobacco Growers Co operative Association. The defense argues the contract violates Ohio antitrust law and the Valentine act. Aaron Sapir and lawyers Harmon Parker Speidel represent the growers.

Rome Murphy, a contractor and builder, had his foot amputated at Good Samaritan hospital after a February barn accident on the A. H. Clark farm. He is recovering and plans to resume work with an artificial foot. friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Frank C. Gunderley of 88 East Street earned the highest marks for the Senior Class at Maryland State Normal School with four A’s three B’s and one C He also starred as goalkeeper for the varsity soccer team which finished a 15 game season with 81 goals for and two against The Batavia youth is son of Charles Gunderley a Batavia High School and Clermont County Normal graduate and his achievements are praised by local friends.
Postmaster John Winspear of Point Pleasant was found dead in his store last Sunday week. An inquest in Batavia Tuesday returned a verdict: gunshot wound self-inflicted, with detectives and coroner differing earlier on robbery or accident. J B Peterson named acting postmaster, continuing Winspear’s mercantile business.
A surge in auto tag requests has swept the county, led by Paul M. Rapp of Batavia. He can issue a temporary card that allows travel until the actual tags arrive. Demand outstrips supply as passenger cars outpace trucks. Rapp expects a fuller stock soon. Apply now to be on the safe side.
Condell Courtot of Owensville reported the theft of his new Ford truck from near a tobacco warehouse in Covington Kentucky after delivering 1500 pounds of tobacco. He left it while cashing a check and returned to find no trace. Sheriff Rapp was notified and began a search by postal card method.
Columbus January 3 Ohio Highway Director Louis A Boulay calls for a special police force to maintain and protect the expanded highway system. He will push the Legislature to appoint highway police to enforce truck laws and maintenance rules amid lax enforcement reported by division engineers.
The Comptroller of Currency and the State Banking Department call banks to report by December 81, 1928. A column review shows Clermont County financials as prosperous with all institutions in good standing.
The Clermont County Jersey Breeders Club schedules a January 19 lunch at the Batavia Hotel with a roast pig from Senator Roudebush and Jersey products on offer. Secretary Frank Walmsley says the event marks renewed efforts to promote the Jersey breed amid improving dairy prices and past inactivity. Reservations via the Farm Bureau office in Batavia.

Clinton County Republicans pass a resolution endorsing Calvin Coolidge for the Republican nomination to succeed himself. Clermont County Republicans also back Coolidge, signaling continued support ahead of the April primary.
Surveyor William B. Brown posts warnings across Clermont County roads prohibiting loads over five tons including vehicle and cargo. Officials will enforce the rule. several arrests may follow fines to deter overloading and protect soft wet roads. No arrests yet, but enforcement will continue to ensure good roads.
The Batavia I O O F lodge will install its newly elected officers next Friday night with Deputy Grand Master Reed of Williamsburg presiding. The Initiatory degree will be conferred. A full attendance is urged and all brethren should attend.
Last week saw record rainfall causing widespread damage to property for farmers railroads and telephone firms. Rivers overflowed flooding fields washing corn from shocks and tearing fences. The N and W railroad faced washouts delaying trains and mail but no lives were lost. The Ohio river exceeded flood stage and a cold snap followed curbing further floods. The East Fork river and Stonelick creek surged though Clermont county escaped major harm.
The guide explains that a single person who supports relatives at home and exercises family control is the head of a family for 1923 income tax. Exemptions are 2500 dollars for net income up to 5000 and 2000 dollars for higher income, plus 400 dollars credit per dependent under 18 or incapable of self support. An example shows a 3000 dollar net income with a 2500 dollar exemption and two 400 dollar credits totaling 3700 dollars. An individual may claim head of family status for only one household member.
Clyde Jones of Pringle & Buerklé was kicked in the face by a mule while bridling the annual in the barnyard last Monday. The blow cut a four inch gash on the cheek and knocked out three teeth, with the jaw spared only by a large chew of tobacco in his mouth. The owners say the mule was only playing.
Bethel area farmers may enroll in a twelve lesson dairying course led by A H Pekuri Bethel High School agricultural instructor. Sessions run 1 1/2 to 2 hours weekly or twice weekly with possible guest instructors and state support. Washington notes that January 13 is urged as Law and Order Sunday by Fred B. Smith of New York. The citizenship conference resolutions call churches to honor three years of prohibition and to promote law observance and enforcement by the government.
Batavia hosts a week of prayer with three churches organizing services. Monday and Tuesday at the Presbyterian church, Wednesday and Thursday at the A B church, and Friday and Sunday at the M E church. Rev Smith will lead a series of meetings afterward to start the new year.
