Postmaster Winspear Dead After Self Inflicted Fire Incident

John Winspear postmaster and businessman of Pt Pleasan t Clermont County died Sunday morning from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He shot himself in the mouth as burglars were believed to be in the post office and a nearby house fire broke out. Neighbors extinguished the blaze and investigators noted a bullet hole and scattered papers. An inquest is slated for Batavia on January 8.

Wallace McMannis and Marion Wallace Wed in Batavia

Rev S Haston McMannis of Winchester Ohio and Miss Marion B Wallace of Cincinnati were married December 27 at 4 PM in Batavia. Parents and several relatives attended. The couple, both graduates of Ohio Wesleyan University, plan to serve as medical missionaries in West China and visit Indianapolis for a church missionary convention. James B Waenerthan started as mail carrier on Route 4 out of Batavia January 14.

A competitive examination to fill the Batavia post office vacancy occurring February 24 will be held in Cincinnati on January 26. Any patron may fill out blanks and receive a card of admission. The exam is not civil service but under the Executive order of May 10, 1921.

Browns vie for Ohio governor and lieutenant governor posts

A report says Colonel Thad H. Brown of Columbus, Secretary of State, is a gubernatorial candidate and Clarence J. Brown of Blanchester, former Lieutenant Governor, also seeks the post. The Browns previously competed two years ago with Thad Brown prevailing. Clarence J. Brown is now publisher of a newspaper chain in southwestern Ohio.

Clermont man dies in Portsmouth home at 45

Guy R. Ackley of Portsmouth formerly Milford suffered a stroke of paralysis last week and died at his home on Tuesday morning aged 45. He was popular with all who knew him and was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery Milford.

McMurchy Rites Mark Long Life of Clermont County Man

James H. McMurchy of Nicholsville Clermont County born April 14 1862 died December 16 1923 aged 61 years 8 months 2 days. He married Kate Ducknall March 2 1892 and had one child who died in infancy. Survived by six of eight siblings he spent most life near his birthplace except three years as Clermont County infirmary superintendent. An Odd Fellows member for 36 years and recent Monroe Presbyterian Church attendee he faced illness with faith in his Saviour. Peaceful sleep to him.

Veteran John C Jenike dies after long military service

John Christian Jenike aged 35, World War veteran, died October 24 at a St. Louis hospital after residence in Delavan and Missionary work in Missouri. He served in the 33rd division with Company B 11th machine gun battalion and saw action in Verdun Meuse Argonne. Survived by wife Lottie Gentzler and baby girl, parents, and siblings. Funeral held October 28 at the Presbyterian church in Delavan with full military honors and large attendance.

Afton Man Slays Chicken Hawk in Roost Raid

James Binkley of Afton killed a three foot chicken hawk found among his chickens. He struck the bird with a club and crippled it before capturing it alive in a closed coop. The hawk, a fine specimen, had been likely preying on flock and roosting birds.

The Batavia post office force handled heavy Christmas mail, hauling mail from the train by truck on several occasions. Mail volume exceeded all previous years and patron calls were answered promptly. The service reflects mail handling now rivaling past express companies.
