The Red Fox hunt of last week opened Wednesday west of town with the pack chasing a fox on farm of Mike Reisinger ending in Sugar Camp. Thursday saw two foxes at Sugar Camp but a divided crowd caused a poor chase. Friday was halted by severe weather, while Saturday brought visitors and a dog drive with numerous locals supplying hounds including Butler, Parshal, Knauer, Andrews, White, Spaldy, Reed, Walsh, Buerkle, Mattox, and Guenther.

Fire on Main street in Batavia destroyed the Ferguson basement and damaged the upstairs residence and first floor. Overheated furnace caused dense smoke. crews fought flames with water streams from windows and holes cut in the floor. Two buildings on the site burned, firefighters praised, and hot coffee from T. C. Teal warmed the men.

Monroe Hamer, a Hillsboro resident, froze to death Christmas night. His body was found upright against a gate by a mill wagon driver, one arm over the gate. Last seen the night before, a vomiting spot and surrounding appearances raise questions about the cause of death. he lived with his son near town. This was the only freezing death reported so far.
