Passing of Familiar Figure From Our Streets

Gosham Fleck died in the county hospital last Friday at age 72. A Kentucky migrant of 26 years, he once worked in cooperage but faced reverses, illness, and blindness before dying. He leaves two sons and a widow living in Brown County. burial was in Union Cemetery on Sunday.

Catholic Mission Opens in Batavia Sunday

A Catholic mission under Franciscan Fathers opens at 10 o clock Sunday March 11 in Batavia in the Kimme Block formerly a photography gallery. English sermons will be given and efforts are underway to erect a church building nearby.

Military Banquet Honors Fort Thomas NCOs

A reception and banquet hosted by the 1st regiment O. N. G. non-commissioned officers for NCOs of companies H K D and C and Fort personnel. The evening featured fine entertainment and a grand banquet with attendees including Sergeants Moore Buerkle and Corporal Glancy. The Batayta boys visited Fort Thomas on Sunday and had a pleasant stay.

Veteran General J Wood Dies at Dayton Age 82

Comrades of the Army of the Cumberland mourn General J Wood who died at his Dayton home on Sunday February 25 at age 82. A 1845 West Point graduate, he served in the Mexican War, raised 40,000 recruits in Indiana in 1861, and fought from Louisville to Atlanta. He was wounded at Stone River and Chickamauga and led the third division of the 4th corps, living in Dayton since 1868.

West Milford Boys Sentenced to School for Burglary

Six boys aged 10 to 12 from West Milford broke into G A Fern’s residence and stole portable items. The justice ordered them to attend school with truancy punishments possibly sending them to the Reform Farm.

Memorial tribute recalls Thomas Terhune born Clermont county Ohio November 13 1832 died February 1 1906 veteran of the Civil War with the 26th Indiana battery praised as frugal industrious and honest known as Uncle Tom for his kindness to neighbors and children. Relatives and comrades honor his memory noting his loyalty to church community and his wartime record ending with taps and solemn rest.

Highland County held a mass convention in Hillsboro to choose 28 delegates and 28 alternates for the Congressional convention at Xenia on March 20. The body unanimously endorsed Hon. Thomas K. Scroggy and pledged solid support, amid a high enthusiasm reflecting a favorable Congressional wind.

Stock Sales At Hamilton House Stables This Saturday

John Miller, a popular local businessman, has purchased the Gelvin furnishing goods establishment and is now in charge. Gelvin is understood to move to Cedron to pursue new business, leaving behind many friends who wish him continued success in his new location.

Oldest Twins in Ohio Die Within Four Days

George and William Bunner aged 83 twins died within a few days of each other from grief. Born in Mt Pisgah they lived apart after moving to Elmwood. Both married. William leaves three sons and George one. William collapsed upon hearing of George’s death and was buried beside him in Mt Pisgah Cemetery.

Rural Carriers Form Association In County Meet

A meeting of rural mail carriers gathered at the courthouse on Thursday to organize an association for social pleasure mutual aid and better service. W E Kain of Batavia was elected president W L Stewart of Milford vice president M R Huggins of Bethel secretary and W R Treton of Williamsburg treasurer. The county currently has 17 carriers present or accounted for with 12 more to be added once the service is completed.

Presbyterian ladies host delightful Armory dinner

A welcoming Armory dinner by the Presbyterian society drew a large crowd with Batavia cookery samples on the menu. The commissary ran short after serving all patrols, and about $0 was realized from sales while attendees enjoyed the social event.
