County commissioners approve a 2,981,335 general fund budget and a across the board five percent salary increase. They warn future inflation could end automatic raises and stress broadening the tax base through industry and commerce to maintain services.
County and township road maintenance costs rise after heavy snowfall. Walter Carter reports emergency spending of 73,988 from Jan 1 to Feb 9, with an estimated 141,000 more needed for weather damage. Pothole and frost heave fixes priced at 100,000 and berm work at 30,000. Several townships report high costs, with Tate Township at 95,000 and Batavia 60,000. Clermont County commissioners buy land for new medical social services and potential water and sewer lab use.
Bruce Henry was appointed county administrator by the commissioners on Monday. The 24 year old Pierce Township resident had served as acting county administrator since last December after William Whit ford resigned. Henry said he will work closely with the commissioners and department heads to implement policies and develop maintenance plans for county buildings.
The Courier won first in news coverage and third in general excellence at the Ohio Hopper Newspaper Show in Columbus. Publisher Glen A Schoonover was named to a national government affairs conference committee and plans to attend sessions in Washington with potential White House events.
State officials and seven county superintendents grappling with missed days due to weather and energy shortages. They oppose extending the year into June, seeking extension of calamity allowances while urging energy conservation and on time graduation.
Third year University of Cincinnati design students presented an unfinished community development study at Bethel village hall. They compared costs with professional planning and proposed a downtown emphasis, pedestrian friendly streets, centralized housing, light industry near the U S Grant Vocational School, and a by pass to reduce truck traffic through the village center.
Bethel Mayor Gary Balser and officials welcome a class project by Doepke’s students who will study Bethel to compare rural and urban life. Doepke stresses the town’s isolation and value of small towns and notes some recommendations may be limited by land and property holdings. Students finish in early March with final presentation between March 14 and 18.
