Printed and published weekly by A M Gest and L D Morris announces subscription terms. One dollar seventy five cents per year in advance, two dollars if paid within the year, and two dollars fifty cents if not paid until the year expires. Adverts appear at the same rates.
Delegates from Ohio counties assembled in Columbus on February 4 1846 for the Whig State Convention. The body organized with secretaries and a president, set rules for governor balloting, and began the first ballot with BEbb Collier Fisher Wade Chambers Cowen Morris and others named among the contenders. The committee on resolutions and officers was chosen, and counties with partial representation could vote.
The Whig convention in Columbus unanimously nominating William Bebb of Butler for Governor. Col James Collier addressed the crowd and Bebb spoke on Whig principles. Resolutions favored sound banking, opposed hard money and the Sub Treasury, defended Oregon policy, tariff safeguards, and national unity. The meeting praised Henry Clay and honored state Whig committees and the Ohio State Journal.
The nineteenth annual Ohio Deaf and Dumb Asylum report by H N Hussert highlights the new south wing completed at cost 3484 dollars with 3000 more needed for furnishings. It notes 104 pupils, one death, and praise for the superintendent, with reflections on education methods, industrious habits, and the role of signs versus articulation. It also lists visits by European and U S officials to study instruction methods and a boot and shoe workshop for older boys.
Me H presents an abstract on institutional status and concerns with a reserve for future discussion. Among 104 pupils only seven names from the state are noted. The report sketches care, costs, and claims about the Blind and Deaf and Dumb Asylum, portraying orphans saved from misery and want as light beams in darkness.
A lengthy reflection on social pressure and conformity argues that concern for public opinion constrains authentic feeling. It urges freedom, honesty, and personal frankness, condemning sects, parties, and cliques for tying hands and dampening joy. It contrasts ideal openness with awkward host guest norms and cites scattered quotes from Mrs. Child and others on information and decay.
