Pioneer Odd Fellow John Zurmuhle Honored by Batavia Lodge
The Bundle of Sticks reprints a sketch of John Zurmuhle Sr born October 17 1824 in Switzerland arriving in New York in 1849 and Batavia Ohio in 1850. He joined Batavia Lodge No 186 on July 12 1854 at age 30 and remains the lodge’s oldest member in good standing for over fifty five years. He served as past grand since 1873 and long time financial secretary. At eighty six he still recalls lodge history and works about ten hours daily as a shoemaker on Spring street.
