The Clermont Courier earned second place in general excellence in the under 2500 population class at the Osman C. Hooper Show of the Ohio Newspaper Association. It also earned thirds in makeup and sports news and a notable mention in community service, with judges praising its news coverage and bold editorial stance.
The News-Democrat Georgetown The Clermont Courier Batavia and The News-Herald Press Gazette Hillsboro earned 13 awards and two honorable mentions at the Osman C Hooper Newspaper Show in Columbus. The News-Democrat led in general excellence and make up with top honors, while The Clermont Courier and The News-Herald also placed in multiple categories. Jerry N Shinkle Batavia Route 2 made OSU engineering honor roll with a 3.25 average or better.
Batavia restaurants and cafes joined a "Coffee Day for Polio" effort raising 188.32 for the county polio fund. Determan's collected 58.10, Nash Pharmacy 7.74, Blocher pharmacy 14.68, Danbury's 12.70, Angy's Cafe 82.40, and the Dairy Bar 12.70 as patrons donated to the Polio Drive. The Mothers' March on Polio, postponed from last Friday due to heavy snow, is rescheduled to February 4.
A rummage sale to benefit the Damon Runyan Cancer Fund starts at 10 a.m. Saturday February 5 at the Eagles Hall in Batavia. Sponsored by the FOE Ladies Auxiliary, donations are welcome and articles will be picked up by calling Batavia 38781.
Four members of the Proffitt family were injured in an auto truck collision on Fallis Road near Loveland. George Proffitt of Foster skidded into a truck driven by Walter Ernst of Dayton. Mrs. Pearl Proffitt suffered possible fractures of the nose jaw and arm. Bessie Hendrickson 17 and Wayman Proffitt were treated by a Loveland physician.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol aided a Williamsburg mother Mrs Una Faulkner by securing a needed type blood from Cincinnati. Patrolman William Schnyer collected the blood and, with Sergeants W E Lewis and Bert Allen, transported it about 40 miles in 27 minutes to Brown County Hospital, enabling birth complications to be treated.
Owensville will host a Polio Frolic at 8 p.m. Saturday February 5 in the school auditorium. Chairmen Mr and Mrs Will Riehle oversee the event featuring dancing and attractions for the community.
Three Clermont County districts plan spring expansion costing over half a million dollars. Glen Este-Mt. Carmel will add a new elementary building on Summerside Road with 25 acres. Amelia and Goshen add rooms to existing additions to handle growth. Bond issues were sold and plans are being finalized. A separate note reports a New Richmond PTA executive meeting February 7 at 7:30 p.m. hosted by Mrs. Florence Hines at 405 Front Street.
Marathon Grange will confer the third and fourth degrees on a class of nine candidates Friday evening February 4. County Deputy Carl Anstaett will inspect degree work. A County wide lecturers conference is set for 1 30 p m Saturday February 5 at the Williamsburg Community Center. All interested in grange welfare are welcome.
The Union Heights Lions Club unveiled two Route 125 signs east and west of Williamsville. Pictured left to right are Ricky Driber with Lions secretary-treasurer Frank Lepper and president Ray Markham, plus Bob Siedler Rev. D G Lach, as members from Williamsville Mt. Carmel and Tobasco join the newly formed club.
The Clermont County Baseball League will hold its first business meeting of the 1955 season in the county courthouse conference room on Monday February 21 at 8 30 pm. Election of officers planning and discussion of coming season are on the agenda. All last season officers team managers and interested persons are urged to attend. A special invitation is extended to anyone interested in sponsoring or entering a team.
Batavia Grange will hold its next meeting at 8 p m on February 3. Degree work will be presented in the first and second degrees and a film will be shown.
State Patrolman F N Gibbons followed a water trail from a leaking radiator to arrest Noah E Caudill 55 route 6 Batavia for leaving the scene of an accident. Caudill was tried before Mayor J F Paschal and fined 160 dollars plus costs with 10 days in jail. Mayor Paschal noted this was a second such offense in six months.
The Frank W. Weaver Post No. 237 schedules its next meeting for 8:30 p.m. Friday February 4 at the Legion Home.
Auditor Kincaid announced a 2 477 410 dollar check from Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance for Batavia Union Pierce water system bonds. Funds moved from Central Trust to Fifth Third Union Trust as paying agent. Social Security staff to visit Batavia courthouse February 8 for local applicants. Four Clermont chiropractors indicted pleaded not guilty and await trial. Alice Mae Raper admitted forgery on two counts. Lawrence Moore and Hugh Coday admitted breaking and entering. Billy Anness pleaded guilty to grand larceny. Frank Leo Meisman pleads not guilty to failure to yield right of way.
Vincent Piper of Columbus announced the 1955 Easter Seal drive will run March 10 through April 4 nationwide. Clermont County Society leaders include Sam Ausman Williamsburg president Mrs Ada Hoffman Batavia vice president Mrs Ann Figgins Batavia secretary John Friend Jr Batavia treasurer. Mrs Vincent R Garner Batavia is campaign chairman.
Earle B. Kincaid announced that Ray Canter of the auditor's office will assist farmers at three Farm Bureaus with personal property tax returns. Felicity February 17 18 Bethel February 21 23 Goshen February 24 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A hearing will be held in the assembly room of the Clermont County Courthouse in Batavia on February 23, 1955 at 2 30 p m for arguments for and against a proposed change in State Route 132. The change would begin about 1 ½ miles north of the intersection with Route 125 and extend Route 132 northward for 0 57 miles.
Clermont County American Legion posts plan to observe the Back to God movement this month. A body of legionaries will attend a church in the community. Details on time date and church to be attended by Frank W. Weaver Post members will be announced in the Courier.
Harold A. Bolz announces Virgil H. Lucke of Route 4 Love Island is named on the engineering honor roll for the fall quarter. Honor roll requires an average of 3.25 or better. 4.00 is the highest possible.
At the Clermont County Boy Scout annual meeting, Joe Nordman of Milford was named district chairman for the coming year. Other officers include George Pyle, W. A. Duchemin, John Friend, Karl Eckman, Albert Kistner, Leonard Harding, and others as neighborhood commissioners. District Executive Carlton Hyde made his first post hospital appearance. The district reports 50 units with 1243 enrolled, aiming for 1463 by year end, and outlines activities from Boy Scout Week to the Boy Scout Circus.
