Clermont County Tax Payers Pay 80 Percent Owed

Treasurer Erdman reports 80 percent of December taxes in Clermont County have been paid. The timely collections assure funds for business needs for the next six months. Despite a low mood, normal collection levels were reached.

Han nah Motor Co. leases stations to Batavia Oil Co

Last Thursday afternoon the Han nah Motor Co of Bethel leased their service stations and garage to the Batavia Oil Company. Stan Montgomery will be the manager in charge. He is a capable man for the place and popular with all. Batavians are sorry to part with him.

Family of Eleven given shelter by Marshall Reynolds

Marshall Reynolds hosted a traveling family of eleven and their parents Friday night in the council room. He provided quarters, a substantial supper, and sleeping cots as they traveled from Louisville to Charlestown. Mrs. Massey supplied clothing. the group continued on Saturday morning. Batavia shelters travelers, with 94 sheltered last month.

Hearing to determine sanity in murder case reaches ruling

John McGenean of Marathon faced a sanity hearing before Judge Charles White after 80 days of observation at Lima State Hospital for the death of Eddie Gansman last November. The court ruled he is gone, with trial set for March 18 and a new venue involving 76 names.

Clermont County Schools Face Operating Deficits in Countywide Finances

Financial statements as of January 1 show most Clermont County school districts running deficits in general funds despite reduced expenses. State aid shortfalls and delinquent local taxes drive deficits, with salaries and supplies cut but efficiency at risk. Farm Accident Kills Man Cutting Firewood Near Poetown

Earl Trissler age 58 of near Poetown is crushed by a falling tree while cutting firewood. His son found him after he did not answer the supper bell. Coroner Sam White rules accidental death. his widow and two sons survive.

In Batavia Court of Common Pleas Judge Charles White presided over a probate dispute where Harry Groves of Norwood contests his father Geo Groves’s will on grounds of undue influence by a daughter. The jury, after three ballots, found for the plaintiff and set aside the will. case to higher courts.

Jail Breakers Captured After Two Months of Freedom

In Milford and Clermont County, officers recaptured two escapees after their Nov 18 jailbreak from the county jail. Lloyd Church and Monon Cherry fled from Batavia with stolen property valued at 2500 dollars, later located in Memphis, Tennessee. They face auto theft charges and were to be prosecuted by Clermont authorities.

Newly elected officers were installed last Friday night with Rev Ludwick as noble grand and William Brothers as vice grand among others. Refreshments of home made ice cream and angel food cake followed. Williamsburg lodge also installed officers Tuesday night.

Batavia broadcasts on WHBD with Mt. Crab Thursday 6:30 to 7:30. Thursday Batavia hosts Moscow at 7:30. Statewide results include Mt. Carmel 18 Newtown 22 and Mt. Carmel 20 Mt. Carmel open for grade games. County leagues feature Williamsburg Batavia 81 to 28 and Owensville 51 to 89 loss for LaMacedas. Two teams, New Richmond and Amelia, split results with 40 to 20 boys and 24 to 17 girls.

Clermont County Rat Banquet Aims to Curb Rat Infestations

Clermont County launches a rat control campaign with a February 28 banquet and distributed bait kits. The plan covers fish meat and cereal baits with red squill, costing 50 cents per three cans, and asks farmers and towns to place bait by February 28 after orders by February 9. Local distributors include Amelia, Batavia, Bethel, and Milford, among others.

Williamsburg Grange Meets With Vocational Talk and Contests

Williamsburg Grange met January 21 with strong attendance. Features included Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. Haworth presenting A Negro Scotch and Lyle Sutton discussing vocational agriculture. Sutton, a Williamsburg High School freshman, will compete at Ohio State University during Farmer's Week after winning the school and district public speaking contests.
