Postmaster General J. Edgar Day announced plans for a new Amelia post office to improve service and worker conditions. The 4,000 square foot building on east side of Kline Avenue will serve 8,000 people, replacing the current facility at 16 Main St, with land to be bid and leased to the department.

Tractor Wagon Crash Injures Seven on Rt 74 Near Batavia
At 425 PM Friday a farm tractor and wagon on Rt 74 west of Batavia were struck by an automobile. Injured were Broadus Barnett 54 driver head lacerations and back injuries Nelson Norton and his wife plus four children. all lacerations and bruises with Mrs Norton pelvis injury. The Norton family taken to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital while Barnett treated at Batavia Medical Center. Three Barnett sons Walter 18 Broadus Jr 16 and Ernie 14 were in the wagon and escaped injuries. Police said both vehicles were eastbound when the tractor swung from the curb lane to turn into a farm lane and was hit as the car attempted to pass on the left.

Baby Dies Along With Two Men In Christmas Morn Fire
In Newtown Ohio at 15 Miami Terrace a Christmas dawn blaze killed Pamela Terry eight months and two men Escor Pike 40 and Howard Ridgeway 39. The fire trapped all in the frame house and rescuers failed. Ridgeway tried to save the baby then died near the infant. Pike's body was found elsewhere in the ruins. Mrs Stevenson and her daughters survived. The infant's father Roger Terry is at sea with the US Navy. Graveside services were held in Highland Cemetery Kentucky and Bethel Cemetery Ohio pending details.

Morgan Petroleum Co drillers struck gas at 290 feet on the Creed Calloway farm near Rt 749 between Lindale and Palestine. At 410 feet the well yielded about 500000 cubic feet per day. Frank Morgan headed the company and said the gas may come from a shallow pool of coil. The well is capped temporarily and attracting motorists. It is the second well for the company. the first on the Linville farm was dry and filled in.
