Production Halt on 9400 Acres of County Cropland
A year end report by Clermont County ASC chair C W Thompson notes about 9400 acres of county cropland will be removed from production in 1960 under Conservation Reserve contracts. About 7200 acres are already out, with 3200 more expected from 1959 signup. Whole farm contracts affect 7200 acres, removing production potential and allowing farm residence and limited land use. The Conservation Reserve, part of the federal program, pays annual rent and some establishment costs. roughly 5 percent of U S cropland is now in reserve.

Disaster Service of the Cincinnati Area Red Cross reports 11 months of aid to Clermont County residents totaling 101942.42 dollars including 15 local cases mostly from fires and 982.71 dollars for January floods. Aid covers food clothing shelter medical care and furnishings.

The County Library Board plans for January use of a new Ba tavia building leased from Harry Kahle at 480 a month but walk in service is dropped after a 6500 cut in 1960 operating funds. The board sought 77443 from intangible taxes but was cut to 70909. They currently rent space at Clermont Tire and Supply for 175 a month.

A Christmas Eve carols and candle lighting service at 11 p.m. will unite First Methodist Church Batavia and Olive Branch Methodist Church. The Olive Branch choir directed by Homer C. In the January 1959 flash floods Cross expenditures reached 461,058 dollars. Ohio residents received 1,965,064.94 dollars in outright disaster assistance with 7,863 people aided. In the five county Cincinnati area 2,523 residents obtained 191,558.94 dollars.
Poor Relief Cash Sent For Holiday Aid
Clermont County receives 24355.95 as its share of a 5 million emergency advance distribution of poor relief funds urged by State Auditor James A. Rhodes. The advance totals were mailed after the tax collection reached 5 million, ahead of the usual Feb 1 distribution. Rhodes hopes the funds reach homes in time to ease Christmas hardship.

Prisoner Sends Card From Pen to Sheriff Greeting
Paul Stewart of Newtonsville now serves a one year term in Ohio Penitentiary after jail breaks. He mailed a greeting card to Sheriff Clyde Dericks, apologizing and saying he did not know what he was doing while drunk. Stewart escaped twice and slipped through a small jail window to flee, then was recaptured within an hour.

Damage estimated at 1500 occurred at the Toot N Tell It Restaurant when an oil space heater started a attic fire. Firemen battled the blaze for two hours before control. Operator Stanley Schafer, a Williamsburg council member, runs the popular youth gathering spot.
