The Courier will publish combined editions on Thursday December 22 and Thursday December 29 to allow staff more holiday time. Offices and the mechanical plant close at noon on December 22 and 29 and reopen the following Monday.
The Clermont County Planning Commission nominates William Frye of New Richmond for 1961 chairman. Joseph Urban is named for vice chairman and Ralph Kunze for secretary. Election and installation set for January 4 at the Homestead Inn Milford. Retiring chairman is James E. Miller of CGE Beckford Plant.
Auditor J F Paschal announced about 300 000 in delinquent taxes have been mailed with a January 14 deadline to avoid property sale procedures. Unpaid after this date will be listed for newspaper publication as required before action to sell. Regular 1960 first half tax bills will be mailed in February due to reappraisal delays.
Bethel mayor Charles L. Hook will resign effective December 31 and will take office as county commissioner on January 1. Francis Smith, president pro tem of council, becomes mayor and a new councilman will be appointed. The Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Co names Mrs Sophia B Johnson night chief operator at Batavia office.
The American Legion posts in Clermont County thank residents for gifts to the Neediest Kids Christmas Fund. Collection points and local firms aided toy and clothing donations. financial gifts were received at Box 311 Batavia. A partial list of contributors includes Edith Fridman, Robert H. Herman, Emilie McDowell, Anna Atwell, Wayne Oney, Clarence Ragland, A. H. Merkle, and many groups from Milford to Batavia.
John W. Baker of Pioneer Ohio state commander of the Disabled American Veterans will address an open meeting for veterans at the Clermont Courier Building 385 West Main St Monday January 8:15 p.m. Baker a WW II veteran and former 115th Regiment commander will speak to veterans widows and dependents and outlines DAV history and purpose.
The trial of Dr Robert R Freund 58 of Branch Hill is continued to Friday to allow the defense to answer surprise testimony. Judge Harry Britton heard the case without a jury and allowed new testimony as both sides had rested. The state accuses the physician of illegal abortion that caused the death of Beatrice Vrentas. Witnesses for the state testified they saw two of the three women who took Mrs Vrentas to the doctor’s office before noon and carrying beer. The defense has said Mrs Vrentas was having a miscarriage and later went into shock. The coroner was involved and instruments were discussed.
The Clermont County Grand Jury reported to Judge Britton that 17 people were indicted over a Friday and Saturday session. Indicted offenses include issuing bad checks, breaking and entering, forgery, driving without consent, second degree manslaughter, and intentional shooting. Several defendants were not indicted or freed upon request.
