Annual Red Cross meeting in Clermont County

The American Red Cross Clermont County Chapter held its annual meeting December 18 at Batavia M E church with broad county attendance. Officers elected include E M Gross as county chair for 1923 and a new executive committee representing Batavia, Bethel, Cleveland, Milford, Williamsburg, Amelia, Goshen, Felicity and other towns. reports noted rising 1928 membership and active junior and home service programs.

Batavia High Boys crush Crescent Springs and Walnut Hills

Batavia High School boys basketball defeated Crescent Springs 58 to 11 and Walnut Hills 53 to 7 last week. They prepare for tougher foes ahead and will travel with the girls team to Norwood next Friday to meet Norwood High. A. H. Clark of Batavia won the Owensville school building contract and signed papers Monday as the low bidder on Williamsburg school work pending weather.

Tuberculosis Cited as Cause of Child Crippling

Edgar F. Allen president of the Ohio Society for Crippled Children says tuberculosis cripples at least one third of children under the society. He urges actions to diminish tuberculosis and notes the society endorsed the Ohio fight and pledged support for the 1922 seal sale in Cincinnati.

Orlando Kelch a Batavia resident and Civil War veteran died November 29 at his daughter Mrs E B Vickrey Mount Washington aged 86 He was held in high esteem Funeral services were held December 1 at Mt Moriah burial followed The Batavia Woman's Club met with Mrs Anna Tatman last Saturday for a program attendance low due to holiday work at home.

Sixty-Five Gallon Still Cap Taken In Clermont County Raid

Homer Hunt of Olive Branch obtained a warrant for Frank Miller and Simon Welder of Lindale. Sheriff J B Rapp Deputy Gallagher W E Kain Kyle Moyer and Ora Malott surrounded the DéGarmo n home near Lindale and seized a 65 gallon still 16 gallons of whisky 900 pounds of corn sugar and 28 barrels of mash. The defendants pled guilty before Mayor Ross to manufacturing and possessing liquor and were fined 800 each for Welder and Miller plus Miller 500 for possession. Welder released after Cincinnati backers posted 800 and costs. Miller’s 1800 bond was pledged. The case suggests outsiders ran the operation. Fines split with half to the State and rest to officers and town.

Oscar Bradfute of Xenia was elected unanimously to the presidency of the American Farm Bureau Federation at its Chicago annual meeting. He has led the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation since its creation and has long served as a trustee of Ohio State University and as an officer of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. He is a noted Aberdeen Angus breeder and judge and spoke at the Clermont Farm Bureau meeting in Batavia on November 28.

Hillsboro Light & Power Co Refund Battle Over Rates

The Light and Power Co of Hillsboro will refund 18,000 dollars excess charges after years of dispute over rates. Citizens were billed 15 cents per kilowatt while the board of public utilities says 12 cents. The matter may be settled without supreme court intervention.

Batavia Tobacco Market Sees Strong Saturday Sale

Batavia warehouse reported a good sale with most grades selling well though not as strong as the first sale. Total floor offering 47 660 lbs, 7 646 lbs rejected, 40 0156 lbs sold at 25 66 per cwt, cash value 10 207. The next sale is set for Thursday and after New Year sales will return to Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Georgetown Gazette passed to A. Mitchell on Monday after a six week court escape left Mesers O E Young and L P Pobst with the property.
