A holiday feature reports Deputy sheriffs, including Det. Greg Hensley, delivering food and gifts to needy families from a jail van as Sheriff John Van Camp notes progress on a new jail. Other items mention training classes, animal shelter staffing, and local holiday theft cautions.
Union workers from United Food & Commercial Workers AFL-CIO CLC launch a long term campaign against Bigg's at EastGate urging Cincinnati shoppers to boycott while highlighting sub standard wages and benefits. Organizer Beth Shulman cites pickets flyers and radio spots as efforts with expected impact after the new year. Attorney Edward Mitchell says Bigg's has no immediate legal action planned. Locals 1099 and 610 representing Kroger and other grocers fund the campaign with weekly $1 assessments.
In Batavia $3.5 million in community development revenue bonds were approved to fund a 100-room Best Western hotel at Bigg's Plaza. J Kermit Smith, a Williamsburg consultant, says the hotel should open by fall 1986 or early 1987. Vinnie Patel, 26, is named general manager of Shihasi Investments, the developer, with Robert A. of Richmond Hill supervising construction. Shihasi seeks Best Western affiliation and lists Dr N L Patel as 80 percent owner of the Ohio partnership.
Clermont County commissioners, at a special meeting, rejected National Union Insurance Co. and Batavia agents Charles Miller Insurance Co. and will readvertise for a comprehensive general liability and vehicle policy. The current plan would cost about 800000 annually vs 250000 prior and excludes key risk areas. Renewal rates for buildings and contents and boiler coverage were accepted.
Planning staff backs Batavia proposal by Glen W. Holman for a 25.39 acre office complex fronting Old Ohio 74 and along the west side of I-275. The plan calls for B-7 planned business zoning with restrictions to curb heavy traffic and place multistory, office uses west of a new access road and residential uses east.
