The New Richmond Masonic lodge reports a membership boom with strong turnout at a Saturday ceremony. Three candidates Lou F White Dr Erdman and Mr Bogart were raised by local and visiting brothers from Moscow Laurel Bethel Amelia and Batavia. Lyman House a 53 year member assisted and a banquet followed the degrees. An Eastern Star Chapter was recently instituted to benefit the order.
John Penny age 17 of New Richmond was shot in the stomach by George Hill a tenant after returning from checking chickens. The gun discharged when Hill stood at the kitchen door causing Penny’s fatal injuries. Penny died Thursday morning after lingering from the Wednesday evening incident. Burial followed Saturday.
W E Ellis a leading farmer of Withamsville and Miss Stella Burkhart of Madisonville were married last Thursday. The ceremony was held at home on the Grant Highway and performed by Rev. Hahn due to the bride’s late father’s death. About 100 neighbors serenaded the couple Friday evening and the bride met many new friends as instrumental and vocal selections were heard followed by ice cream and treats.
On Monday night December 10 Batavia Eastern Star officers were installed by Miss Mary Homan assisted by Mrs. Helen Lies. Census includes W M Alice Friend, W P E R Justice, A M Eva C Justice, Secretary Bertha H Rush, Treasurer Carolyn M Scott, Conductress Alph Speidel, Associate Conductress Retta Les, Chaplain Frances Marshall, Marshal Mary Homan, Organist Grace McDonald, Adah Nellie Lytle, Ruth Mayme Halbisch, Esther Helen Rush, Martha Bessie D Glancy, Electa Ivy Robinson, Warder Laura Peterson, Sentinel Jacob Friend with refreshments and a social hour after the ceremony.
Batavia Blue Lodge No 1 F A M holds a special assembly Saturday evening December 22 1928 with two candidates for the Master Mason degree starting at 7 o clock. Refreshments follow the work. Visiting brethren welcome. Wm Lukemier W M BE Ely secretary.

Frank Knauer of Batavia suffered the loss of a front finger on his left hand when a shotgun discharged while rabbit hunting last Friday. Snow inside the barrel likely caused the gun to fire as he tried to remove it. he cannot recall pulling the trigger and only realized the injury when reloading for another rabbit near Bethesda hospital in Cincinnati.

Miss Bess Walker daughter of W. R. Walker was struck by a auto at Fourth and Vine streets while attempting to catch a streetcar. She suffered a skull fracture and other injuries, was taken to a hospital, regained consciousness, and gave her name and address. Her family and Dr Ashburn were notified. An X ray was taken. police investigate fault.
Miami county officials announce several township centralized schools will shut by the end of eight months due to lack of funds. Newton township’s $150,000 building will close December 21, affecting about 400 pupils. Taxpayers defeated an extra three mill levy in November. officials urge support for levies to secure funds and state aid if needed.
