Batavia Fire Chief Jake Laffleur resigned after a hearing began on alleged failures to keep fire records and inform officials about department applications. He demanded the removal of a fire phone at his home, while Mayor Jamieson criticized cooperation. Council action continued.
The Batavia Board of Education accepted a bid by C. J. McCloy and Co. for 610000 in bonds to finance a new Batavia High School and improvements. The bidder, a Batavia High School graduate and son of local doctors, offered 3 3/8 percent interest. The project includes classrooms, labs, gym, shop, cafeteria, library and parking. bids for construction are due by noon January 16.
Two inmates escaped the Clermont County jail during religious services and remain at large. Clyde C. White and Eugene Simpson, both 20, faced forgery and auto theft charges respectively, with White’s grand jury indictment lacking forgery charges but including an escape count. Police identified them via photos at a residence phone call spot, while Simpson’s brother also fled earlier. other inmates faced various indictments and a jail-safety overhaul was urged. Robert A. Jones will speak at the Clermont County Trustees meeting in the common pleas courtroom.
Judge John W. Haussermann, longtime New Richmond resident and banker director, marked his 97th birthday with a family dinner, gifts, and many well wishes. He is known as the gold king of the Philippines and maintains ties to the First National Bank. His son Dr. John W. Haussermann Jr. joined the celebration, while Francis C. Haussermann dialed in from Florida.
The West Clermont Board of Education voted Jan 4 to curb district operations after the Nov 3 levy failed. Bus transport ends for high schoolers, supplies and workbooks are restricted, building maintenance limited, after hours use minimized, and walking to main roads required for bus boarding. Resignations noted, new hires made, and contracts awarded for Branner and two junior high additions with heating work held for later.
A report from the County Commissioners Association of Ohio notes progress since 1962 including a $3.1 million Union Township sewer project, 20 percent rate cuts for the PUB water system, a $390,000 extension of the MGS water system serving 362 new users, and three new light industries. The document also cites a $46 million Beckford plant ground breaking, a $96,000 Kahle property office purchase, and rental income to offset costs. It mentions a three year soil survey costing $63,160 with federal and state agency support, a regional transport study, a road program worth about 350 miles resurfacing, 21 one-way bridges removed, and $112,800 in U S Bureau of Public Roads construction with Clermont County sharing $61,400.
Bertha Pieper of Fair Meadows Garden Club led the ground breaking for a 30000 activity building on a 30 acre Williamsville Tabasco Community Park. Attendees included Union township trustee Tom Clepper Park Board President James Montague and Stanley Cann with architects McGill and Smith Amelia and Will Light Construction of Grove as contractor.
Sheriff-elect Don Watson asked county officials to authorize a local restaurant to cater prisoners for sixty days. Proposals capped at 50 cents per meal. meals served in jail on county plates. Liming's election as Washington Township Trustee to replace Ralph Houser takes effect January 1966.
