Clermont County commissioners met in adjourned session in Batavia on Monday December 3 with Manly A. Hill Homer L. Remley and Sam Ausman present. Bills for General Fund and County Home were approved and the auditor authorized to draw warrants totaling 3 (text truncation)
Ada Hoffman of Glen Este is appointed Public Health Nurse by the County Board of Health effective December 10, taking over the northern district. She previously served as an Army nurse in World War I and worked with Cincinnati’s Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. health program. She is married to Robert K. Hoffman, a county official.
Mr. David L. Clossin and Miss Al mira Kain daughter of Colonel Kain both of Batavia Ohio were married in Cincinnati last week by the Rev. W P Strickland.
Milford Lodge celebrates its 75th anniversary acknowledging a large roster of master masons. The growth traces to soldier applications during the four years Camp Dennison was garrisoned, making it the lodge with the most master masons in the state.
The front page notes a landslide victory with the candidate winning by a record majority. The winner polled eleven hundred more votes than Harding and led Willis Ripley Bee by two thousand.
Batavia and Batavia Township Fire Department graduates present their first entertainment at Batavia High School Auditorium on December 8 at 7 45 p m showcasing the WKRC Cornhuskers Jamboree. Cowboy Copas hosts with Shorty Sharp Judy Perkins Red Herrin Richie Smith and veterans Copas and Herrin lead a hillbilly western music night tied to WKRC broadcasts. The troupe has toured about a thousand radio shows and five hundred personal appearances in three hundred towns since forming three years ago.
The Batavia Junior Woman's Club pledges active support to the Girl Scouts of Batavia as a civic project. Members will assist weekly programs hike with scouts and help earn merit badges and honors. The Boy Scouts recent use of Town Hall Council chamber is noted.
The senior class will present the mystery comedy "$10, 000 Reward" Saturday December 15 instead of Thursday. The performance promises suspense from start to finish.
The Victory Class of the Methodist Sunday School will hold a Christmas bazaar on Saturday December 8 at 2 PM in the Methodist church. Proceeds support church programs and local charity efforts.
A 21 year old sailor, Anthony Jacob Lang of Batavia Route 2, and Anna J. Healey, 17 of Cincinnati, 1621 DeSales Lane, were granted a marriage license in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Clermont County forms a five township plan led by Mayor A. C. Munden Sr to collect used clothing for displaced Europeans. Batavia Lions Club Kiwanis Loveland Milford and other groups organize drives with Rotary chair Howard F. Duvall and Judge Orville Halbisch supervising. Last year the county sent a full carload meeting set for early January to finalize collection plans.
Farm Bureau Co goal Association specialists in Columbus suggest rat control by using repellents or by raising the crib. Heavy applications of repellents deter rodents, while elevating the crib at least two feet and isolating it from other buildings removes the rats’ protection.
Clermont County Chapter of the American Red Cross asks for volunteers to join a home service training program. The course aims to prepare workers to assist service men, veterans, and their families with essential support. Interviews scheduled December 10 at Batavia chapter office. age 21 to 55 and high school education required.
Young men 17 and older in the United States on December 1 may reenlist under new rules. Veterans choosing two years get up to 60 days fur lough. three or four year terms include a 90 day fur lough. Pay remains. stations may vary. Marine Corps Institute and Armed Forces Institute offer schooling toward high school and college credits. The Clermont County Prince of Peace Declamation Contest occurs Sunday evening December 9 at 7 30 p m in Batavia Methodist Church. The Ohio Council of Churches awards a silver medal to the winner who advances to the district contest in January for a gold medal. District winners compete for cash prizes and college scholarships with state events set for January in bus. I E Jenkins chairs with local church pastors aiding.
Chief of Police Barber and the United States Secret Service warn residents to guard government and other checks from theft and forgery. Guidelines urge not endorsing before the holder is present, locking mailboxes, printing names clearly, notifying the post office of address changes, cashing at the same location, and verifying endorser identity.
Reports from 14 of 23 burley markets in Kentucky show prices ahead of last year’s opening day. Lexington posted the top average of 49.03 dollars as 2,533,814 pounds sold for 1,242,372.41 dollars. Maysville reached a 49.89 dollar average on 998,241 pounds for 497,997.50 dollars, with most grades at ceiling prices and a high bid of 60 dollars per hundred pounds for A2L wrappers.
Eight farmers institutes will be held in Clermont County this spring under the State Extension Service. Meetings run the week of February 18 in Williamsburg Moscow Marathon Laurel Amelia Newtonsville and Bethel with Bethel on February 21 featuring Rev. Russell Hoy. The county gets 300 from the extension service for expenses and speakers. County Agent W Woton will cooperate. all institutes except Bethel will be two day sessions.
Figures from the Clermont County Tuberculosis and Health Association show 224 X-ray examinations last year, with 189 free of charge. In 1944-45 school year 886 children were tuberculin tested and 42 follow up X-rays were done. The association attributes low tuberculosis deaths to careful screening and Roentgen’s X-ray, discovered fifty years ago.
Plans for the seventy third annual Ohio State Grange convention in Columbus December 10 to 13 were announced by Joseph W. Fichter master of the Buckeye State Grange. More than 1 000 members will be initiated including Governor Lausche and Mrs Lausche with speakers Chester Bowles Albert Goss Carl Weygandt L J Taber and Harry Caton. Local granges from Coshocton Muskingum and Fayette counties will perform during the event with degrees conferred and a juvenile degree presented.
Owensville junior class will present the 3 act comedy Peck's Bad Boy at 8 p.m. on December 13 in the school auditorium. Tickets are on sale for 25 and 35 cents. The show features George M. Cohen's touring version and actors including Jimmy Duffy and Mary in a modern take on the classic tale.
Edward G. Saxton announces a series of county meetings for 1945 soil-building practices reporting and 1946 wheat crop insurance acreage reporting. Sessions run 1 to 8 30 p m at listed township schools and halls from December 11 to December 15, urging attendance by farm residents.
Enlisted Marines discharged since Japan's surrender and others may join the Volunteer Marine Corps Reserve for three or four years. Major Kenneth C. Houston of the Cincinnati Recruiting District announced the plan. Veterans enter in class III(b)a, remaining inactive in peace and available for active service during national emergencies. Time in inactive status counts for longevity pay if activated. Enlistment is allowed on discharge day at Room 242, Post Office Building, Cincinnati.
