The United States imported 22,855,090 pounds of foreign butter and substitutes in the first seven months of this year, the highest on record. Analysts credit favorable exchange rates, lower cargo costs, and shifts in export routes from Denmark to Australia and Argentina, with Ireland also boosting production.
In the first seven months of 1920 American butter exports reached 527,271 pounds while 22,986,294 pounds were sent abroad in the same period of 1919. Danish butter imports are being curtailed as storage prices here are higher than wholesale American prices, hindering movement of Danish stock.
A Minnesota herd of 85 cows producing 1200 pounds of butterfat in June tested skim milk showed 864 pounds of real butterfat lost per month. L V Wilson of the USDA urges testing and notes the farmer bought a new separator the next day. The example is presented to prompt others to verify separator accuracy.
