The State Tax Commission ordered reappraisal of real estate for Clermont County and 45 other counties. Appraisers will be appointed per township or corporation with copies of district valuations printed for property owners to compare. Tax duplicates may rise to cover expenses. first payments under the new appraisement are due December 1921.
Prospects look good for Clermont Loose Leaf Tobacco warehouse as manager Mr. Davis and Highland county contacts anticipate 260000 pounds from the area to be sold locally. Tobacco prices range from 8 to 16 cents with most tobacco light and little red weed available.
The piece notes a sharp drop in the hog market and corn prices while consumer prices barely move. Hog futures fell from 18 cents to current levels of about 9.76 per hundredweight, with retail and butcher shop prices diverging. A readjustment is deemed compulsory.
State of Ohio v Ed King and two others ended with a guilty verdict in Common Pleas Court after a three day trial. A large crowd attended as witnesses testified including relatives. A $10,000 damages suit by Bud King against the same defendants awaits action.
Aunt Hannah Kidd aged 88 and widow of Joseph Kidd died last Thursday after a year of ill health. She was buried from Batavia M. B. Church Saturday afternoon and laid to rest in Union Cemetery. She was mother to J. S. Kidd and several other children. Burial followed at the Kidd homestead above town.
The Milford Village Council announces the appointment of How ard KB. Joseph to succeed Alvin H. Hodges as solicitor of Milford. Joseph is a member of Joseph & Murphy of Cincinnati and serves as president of the Milford School Board.
Rev. Smith announces Dr. James M. Taylor, New York City field secretary for the Foreign Missionary Society, will visit Batavia on Thursday December 2 with talks at 1 pm High School 2 pm M E Church Ladies Meeting 6 pm Banquet 7 30 pm All meeting Dr Taylor will lecture on Mexico and seats are encouraged to arrive early for good seating.
Brown county grand jury last week re indicted L V Williams on one perjury and four embezzlement counts after initial indictments were deemed faulty. The case raises questions about reimbursement to the poor people whose money was alleged to be misused.
The Womans Club met with Mrs. E. S. Rush and heard Louise Davis perform vocal and whistling solos. A $10 donation supported Hoover's appeal for starving European children. next Sunday churches will collect funds. A library tea is planned for December 9, and the club meets again December 4 with Mrs. Dial.
The premium list announced at the society's August meeting lists the first and second premiums for exhibitors and invites readers to review who received the awards.
A gray eagle about 7 ft 6 in from wing tip to wing tip was killed by Clarence Wilkin in Walker Woods after pursuing a Wilkin family dog. The bird flew after being shot and measured 8 ft 4 in from beak to tail. Wilkin displays the specimen at his residence for inspection. The bird is accused of carrying off small pigs and chickens.
Special Reporter Charles Curry was seriously injured last Friday when a flywheel exploded during operation of a gas line engine. A piece struck him on the chest and another on the breast, requiring immediate surgical aid. He is believed to have sustained serious internal injuries.
The Clermont County Teachers Association will hold a session at Batavia town hall on Saturday December 11 1920. The program includes a 9 30 a m start with Song America invocation by Rev A P Smith and Batavia Orchestra, roll call and talks on health conditions compulsory attendance school finance and methods to cultivate respect and parent interest with district superintendents leading. Afternoon program features Star Spangled Banner song two addresses by Supt Mark B Whitaker and Prof J W Heckert a solo by Mrs Roland Norton and closing remarks by Supt H Hamilton and secretary Dixie Duvall.
Clermont county is traversed by hunters from city and town areas in search of game. Rabbits are the main target while a few pheasants are reported scarce. Permits are required for foreign hunters before trespassing.
From November 16 to November 26 the probate court in Highland County issued 20 marriage licenses outside of a city, ages 16 to 80, with grooms from across the state. The stretch surpasses Clermont by several in the past 10 years, and officials attribute the rise to warm weather.
Leslie Brown of Paint township Highland county reports a new en viable corn record with 1,260 bushels on ten acres, an average 126 bushels per acre. Moisture 26 percent and cost 88 cents per bushel. Last year yield was 1,014.2 bushels on the same field as he aims for 160 bushels per acre.
Charles Buerkle and George Long of Batavia were in a Ford that overturned at a culvert near Afton after a dance in Williams burg last Wednesday night. Long was trapped under the car and badly injured while Buerkle freed himself. Both were expected to recover in time for the next dance once a date is announced.
Fred Devine, 73, a former resident of this township, died last Thursday at his son George Devine’s home in Summerville after a brief illness. He was well known locally. Funeral services will be held Sunday with burial in Union Cemetery.
George Connor of Ripley died last week in a mysterious manner. A coroner’s post mortem found wood alcohol caused his death. He reportedly suffered greatly and asked for a gun to end his agony. Jamaica ginger was among his drinks. no lemon extract was found. The substitute for whisky is hard on the constitution.
The will of Geo W Case dated December 26 1907 provides for funeral debts then bequeaths all remaining estate to wife Mollie G Case for life with power to sell. After her death remaining real estate and personal property pass to son Howard Case in fee simple. Wife may supply support from estate and gift portions as needed. Nannie E South named executrix for Wilmer P South estate with all property to her absolutely.
Numerous parcels exchange hands with $1 consideration. Transactions list Ella May Manning to Sarah Berry in Bethel for 70 poles and other deeds including acres in Tate Two and Milford. Names include J W Weatherspoon, John S Trout, M R Huggins, KE Whisner, E C Whisner, Eliza J Frazier, William A Parker, Lillie Shinkle, W W Shinkle, Bessie Croswell, William J Ralls, Howard K Snider, Charles H Woodmansee, Milton Trump guardians, and Katherine Robertson among others.

The Batavia Tobacco Market warns growers that floor grading at the house is discontinued to speed unloading. Tobacco must be in uniform grades on the same stick for easy transfer to baskets. First sale set for January 5 with warehouse open December 27.
Clermont County Farm Bureau to hold its annual meeting at Batavia Town Hall on Saturday December 4 starting 9 30 A M with a program including A E Anderson from Ohio State University and Clyde F Presend as county agent along with election of officers and delegates Ezra C Ansteadt will report on campaigns C F High will speak on the Farm Bureau Movement and a push for a coordinated marketing system.
Misses Orella and Alma Hunter visited in Priday while Miss Hazel Hobson is home from Norwe George Conover and family visit. Mrs Cora Chaney and children return to city relatives. H RB Brown arrives from Florida and will be accompanied by his son. Mrs Josephine Hulick hosts relatives for Geo Baum birthday dinner with Geo Baum B F Mull and family Owensville Miss Leonard Van Horn and Ethel Howell among attendees.
