Don B Walker Dies Of Wounds In France

Pvt Donald B Walker 33 of Batavia died from wounds received in action in France Aug 6 after being wounded Aug 1. He trained with a State Highway survey crew, enlisted 1942, served at Camp Livingston and Camp Gordon Johnston, went overseas 1943 in Wales and the British Isles, then France. He is survived by his brother Attorney James W Walker, his mother Florence L Walker, sister in law Roslyn D Walker, and nephew Larry and niece Judy Walker of Batavia.

Batavia High School staffing updates for 1944-45

Batavia Public Schools will open September 5 with the 1943-44 schedule. Jacksonism and tariff praise in 1842 Ohio

Looking backward recalls how in 1842 Ohio supported Andrew Jackson for his public service and tariff protection. It notes his anti third term stance and belief in direct popular election of the president and vice president. The August 29 1894 item lists county office changes and a death of Mrs Elizabeth Roudebush at age 82.

Lt Wayne Schobert Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross

Lt Wayne Schobert of Ohio received the Distinguished Flying Cross for 35 bombing missions as a Fortress pilot in the European Theatre. The 22 year old Owensville native also holds the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and is married to Dorothy Utter. He graduated Owensville High in 1939, entered the service Jan 28 1942, and flew overseas to join his squadron this spring.

County Red Cross Annual Meeting Set for Sept 8 1944

The Cler mont County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting at Batavia High School on Friday September 8 at 8:00 p.m. Elections for the Board and officers will be held, with adoption of proposed by laws. Members donating $1 or more to the Red Cross are urged to attend as reports cover armed forces work production first aid water safety and war prisoners. Harold D Nichols will relinquish county chair and depart September 25 to become Red Cross foreign service field director.

Batavia Soldier Awarded Medal in Panama

Sgt Paul G. McAfee of Batavia Ohio received the good conduct medal for over one year of service with the Panama Coast Artillery Command. He operated anti-aircraft target detection gear in a harbor defense battery under Col William H. Sweet and has served since December 29, 1942. His wife Jean, his parents G. H. and Mrs. McAfee of Batavia, and his brother Tech Sgt L. H. McAfee in New Guinea are listed as family.

William s burg Corp James Anstaett son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Anstaett Williamsburg Ohio is stationed in French West Africa Air Transport Command and Air Base and is now Assistant Crew Chief and mechanic on Transports and Cargo planes He enlisted in 1942 and has been overseas six months. First Lieutenant Coyt A Bud Yeoman, a Milford native and son of Mr and Mrs Frank C Yeoman, is on leave after serving as co pilot and later pilot of a B 25 Mitchell in the South Pacific. He earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and took part in a record bombing raid on Rabaul before his overseas deployment last August.
