Manslaughter case ends in hung jury in Batavia
A nine women three men jury deliberated about 12 hours before declaring no verdict in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Steven Michael Bering. The defendant was accused of suffocating Jerry Mertz by pressing on his abdomen on December 26, 1985, on a bus returning from Grow Inc where Bering worked as a caretaker at the Georgetown sheltered workshop. Prosecutors have not said if retrying the case is planned.
