Clermont County OKs one mill Senior Services levy on ballot

Clermont County commissioners approved placing a five year one mill levy for Clermont Senior Services on the November ballot. The levy would raise about $1 million annually, costing the average homeowner roughly 46 cents a week. Commissioner Clendenin opposed, calling it premature without knowing federal funding outcomes. If approved, some county funds could return to the general fund for new buildings.

Sheriff cracks down on growers

BATAVIA Donna Ruehl a 29 charged last week with cultivating marijuana. Deputies for Sheriff John Van Camp seized about 20 marijuana plants from a farm field at Ruehl's address on Aug 4. Chief Deputy John Ed Parker said the plants 5 to 6 feet tall valued at about 20000. He said investigators waited to confirm who tended the plants before filing the charge. Parker urged residents to report suspected cultivation signs near clearings in woods fields or by streams and to call 732-2231. Calls will be confidential.

Bids Opened for Clermont Facility Over Budgeted Estimate

Bids for the Clermont County Board of Mental Retardation facility were all above the engineer's estimate. Dr. James Wasserman, executive director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, said architects' proposals must be reviewed and a Sept meeting resolution planned. The new facility serves the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The 1987 operating budget is about 1.7 million with a projected 40 thousand dollar deficit, covered by cash reserves from an operating levy. The board must plan for possible funding or service reductions in coming years.

Tipton reveals new plan for Batavia office park

Tipton Associates moves its Batavia Eastlake Business Center project again with a proposed zone change to B-7 planned business for a 6.98 acre tract along Ohio 32. The plan includes six commercial lots, interior streets, and landscaping, amid prior traffic light denial by state and county officials.

Testimony Continues in Batavia Voluntary Manslaughter Case

In Clermont County Common Pleas Court the trial of Hamersville man Steven Bering, 22, for voluntary manslaughter continued. A tape of his Jan. 28 arrest interview was played, detailing the Dec. 26, 1985 bus incident on which 31-year-old Jerry Mertz died after injuries from a restraint.

Grant as unlikely president candidate and early campaign notes

Clermont County records show Ulysses Grant of Point Pleasant and Thomas Morris of Bethel as the only locally nominated for president and vice president. Grant won the presidency twice, Morris failed once. The text also touches on Grant's political evolution, his voting history, and a 1868 Republican convention nomination.
