The Republicans nationwide announce a high quality nomination slate selected on August 11 with strong men from Governor to Coroner. Campaigning continues with a pledge of honest service and broad party support for victors to push the cause to victory in November.
The Republican Central Committee met with 18 of 19 members present at the Hamilton Building Club Room. Leonard L. Harding of Milford was named chairman, H B Glaser of Moscow secretary, and Paul M. Rapp of Bata via treasurer as the group pledged enthusiasm and effort for the November ticket.
Samuel South of Newtonsville now living with his daughter Mrs. Little Lowry of Cincinnati celebrated his 90th birthday on August 18. A large gathering of relatives and friends attended. He is a Civil War veteran born near Owensville and remains hale and hearty.
Miss Mary Lewis of Batavia and Wilbur Hinners of Osgood Indiana staged a joke inviting Rosa Lewis Earl Knotton Mabel Lewis and Clyde Lewis to Coney Island then disappeared to marry at Rev Burdsall home after returning to Batavia They later held a reception at Mrs Lewis parents home on Davis Pike and plan to reside in Osgood Indiana.
An old timer hails Batavia s centennial celebration as the most enjoyable public affair. The town glows with decorations and hospitality as Thursday through Saturday events—hall addresses, singing, armory dances, a modern automobile parade, and a suffragette procession—stir memories of past days and honor Mrs. Lee s 96th birthday cake in the court house yard. The revival of village memories, from old omnibuses to grand court house contests, marks the red letter days for Batavia and its people.
Governor Cox’s outlay claim of 157 dollars amid 10 000 appointees sparks cost debate over the Warnes law. Critics say Hamilton county would pay 180 770 for district and complainant expenses, tripling state estimates and raising questions about governance and taxation.
In the recent 6th district congressional primary Chas. Kearns won by over 700 votes. His supporters praise his bipartisan appeal, legal ability, and readiness to devote personal attention to duties. He is described as an able speaker and a suitable candidate for Congress.
Prisoners led by Jim Anderson and H. Armstrong escaped Batavia county jail by sawing a lift from a lock mechanism and dismantling window bars. Authorities suspect jailer neglect, with no clues found though Bergeman hounds tracked false leads. One prisoner remains at large as locals report repeated singing and sightings near the escape site.

Local history notes migrations from Virginia New Jersey and Pennsylvania to Batavia from 1800 to 1816. It recalls Daniel Duckwall and family, taverns, mills, farms near Backbone Run and East Fork, and the Hulick Weaver Moore families with notable buildings, mills, and fences.
A Normal Extension School will be organized in each of the three county districts taught by a Miami University professor. College credit will be given for all work. Classes meet biweekly at convenient times with subjects including Education Rural Education Method Elementary Mathematics Geography History English Agricultural Education Nature Study Music Drawing and Manual Training. Enroll by sending names to the county superintendent. This is separate from county training and will be located later by the State Superintendent.
In Batavia at the courthouse 15 boys competed in the corn growing contest. Howard Reisinger of Tate Township won on the 14th ballot and Clifford Reed of Batavia Township was chosen as the first alternate. Contestants included Witchger Knight Morford Lewis Reed Rieble Trenner Krift Keach Daugherty Campbell Dixon Jones.
A cyclone and cloud burst struck Felicity last Monday afternoon, about ten minutes long. Roofs and silos were blown down, a tobacco warehouse demolished, trees uprooted, and crops like corn and tobacco damaged. Rain flooded wide areas, with little cyclone insurance for buildings.
Chas Biehm of Georgetown installed a limestone grinding mill producing fertilized limestone in demand on upland farms. Brown county stone lime proved beneficial as fertilizer. A carload was shipped to the Experimental Farm near Owensville for trial use, suggesting a growing local market and ample limestone and shipping facilities in the area.
