Turbulent scenes include bank robbery in Kewanee a fatal Quebec style blaze and political shifts in Iowa Ballots and democracy debated as figures like Hil die. Egypt and India flash global turmoil with Arabi Pasha siege and Paris influenced coups.
From Alexandria August 13 reports say the Coldstream Guards landed and marched to Ramleh where the foot guards encamped under the Duke of Connaught. Arabs gathered along the route while Arabi Pasha’s forces are entrenched. General Alison notes German gunboat Habischt secured. German hospital guards withdrawn, ending foreign landing.
Aug 19 dispatches report the 60th Regiment embarking with Gordon and Cameron Highlanders forming a Highland Brigade under General Alison for Ramleh. The fleet sails with sealed orders as rumors of 36,000 regulars 38,000 militia and 50,000 Bedouins fill the rebel totals.
Two men robbed the First National Bank of Kewanee II, absconding with about 18000 dollars, including gold. Cashier Pratt and Miss Palmer were beaten and locked in the vault before escaping, and a nationwide search with 175 men mounted continues as locals fear lynching.

Dr Ambrose Lawrence of this city shows a horse pistol authenticated as one of a pair owned by Benedict Arnold during his British service. The weapon, a large pattern with flint locks and brass mountings, was linked to Arnold’s St John New Brunswick dwelling later rebuilt after fires. The pistol, long in possession of notable collectors, now rests with the doctor who regards it as a trophy and historic relic.
