Batavia Bridge Dedication Draws Record Town Crowd

Last Saturday Batavia welcomed a record crowd of over 5000 for the bridge dedication. A 50 plus float parade led by J M Patchell opened events, with ribbon cutting by Little Bobby Davison, remarks by officials, and a fireworks display. The day ended with lawn tennis, baseball, band music, and dancing as locals praised the project and debated November politics.

Surface treatment on Route 131 near Clermont to open soon

Work on the surface treating of Route 131 from Route 60 and Route 181 east through Clermont to Route 60 in Brown County will be completed and traffic will resume early next week. Through traffic has been detoured over U S Route 50.

New Concrete Bridge Planned for East Fork at Williamsburg

The State Highway Department announces a new concrete structure to span the East Fork at Williamsburg replacing the old covered bridge. The project will soon be advertised with the $75,000 cost noted as the county seeks funding for this durable replacement.

Former Batavia teacher dies in Indiana

Mrs Henry Mattox formerly of Batavia died August 15 at her daughter Edna Keister’s home near Indianapolis. Burial was August 18 in Arlington Cemetery Washington DC. Survived by five children Porter Gail Janet Edna Keister and Florence Brown. Mr Mattox was a Batavia teacher and county court clerk.

Four Youths Bound Over in Owensville Garage Break In

Four youths from near Bata via and Owensville were bound over to the grand jury by Justice S L Larkin on charges of breaking and entering the Dale McKay Garage at Owensville in May. Kenneth Carter pleaded not guilty and posted 500 dollars bond. Fred Kuttler pleaded guilty and posted 500 dollars. Edward Bilby pleaded guilty and posted 200 dollars. Joseph Emery pleaded not guilty and posted 200 dollars. They were arrested Sunday by Sheriff G G Auxier.

$20,000 Damages Sought in Wire Electrocution Case

A $20,000 damage suit was filed against Southwestern Ohio Power Co. Milford by Attorney Harry Britton as administrator of Elizabeth Donley’s estate after she was electrocuted stepping on a high tension wire during a severe Williamsburg storm. The petition alleges company neglect for downed wires and trees.

Death Takes Pioneer New Richmond Man Robert Donham

Funeral services for Robert Warren Donham 93 a Clermont county resident who died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital Cincinnati were held Tuesday afternoon at T P White's Funeral Home New Richmond. Burial was in Grenemound cemetery. Donham descended from Jonathon Singleton Donham a pioneer farmer near New Richmond and operated a fruit and stock farm until 1915.

Churches to Rally at Owensville Fair Grounds

The Churches of Christ hold an all day rally at Owensville Fair Grounds on Sunday August 26 starting 10 a m. Bible School opens 2 30 p m and features a Union communion service and a youth rally. James DeForest Murch editor of The Lookout will speak. Banners go to the school with the largest attendance and the largest total mileage.

Fred Romohr Injured in Beechwood Bridge Crash

Fred Romohr 35 newly elected Democratic committeeman from Union Township was seriously injured Saturday night when his car ran off the Beechwood bridge near Mt. Carmel. He suffered a broken back and paralysis from the waist down and was rushed to Bethesda Hospital in serious condition.

Huge rattler caught in Adams county in corn field

A 49 inch black diamond rattlesnake with one rattle and one button was captured Sunday in Adams county by BE. E. Erion and Oscar Mosteller. It had just eaten a half grown rabbit. Erion plans to have the skin made into a belt.

Batavia Opens School Year with Early Registration

Batavia public schools open Tuesday September 4 at nine o clock. High school and upper six grades registr ation set for Thursday and Friday August 30 and 31 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Parents urged to attend, especially ninth grade guardians. A Silver Loving Cup awarded to the lodge with the highest attendance. three straight wins grants ownership. Mt Carmel won last year and again this year. Next year 100 percent attendance would make them owner.

Harry Barbeau 54 Dies After Brief Illness

Harry Barbeau died suddenly at his Olive Branch home Saturday morning after a brief illness. For years with Batavia flour mills he is survived by two sons Byron and Robert and a widow. Funeral Monday at 1 p.m. from Moore Funeral Home with burial at Waynesville. He belonged to the Batavia Masonic lodge.

Brown Leads in Clermont County GOP Primary Victory

Clermont County Republicans celebrate a strong primary showing led by Clarence J. Brown for governor.
