News of Japan's surrender swept Clermont County with church bells alarms and sirens. Citizens flocked to services, businesses closed for a two day holiday, and county fairs drew record crowds as officials anticipated attendance records.
Five road improvement contracts were awarded by Director Perry T. Ford after a Tuesday road sale. The deals cover bituminous treatment widening and resurfacing for 16.25 miles at a total price of 166.60 dollars. Counties include Clermont Geauga Hancock Knox and Miami with projects in Clermont County.
August draft quota takes 17 men from Clermont County as of August 8. Bethel and Tate communities gear up for the Bethel Tate Homecoming in Bethel on August 31 and September 1. Booth space is on sale at White's Friendly Service Station. The Grange will prepare food, the Lions Club will sponsor evening dances at the Bethel School Auditorium, with Cecil Young and his orchestra providing music.
The Clermont War Price and Rationing Board reports OPA increases coal ceiling prices by about four cents per ton for bituminous coal and 40 cents per ton for coke to remove production impediments. Dealers may pass these costs to consumers while OPA addresses feeder pigs price issues to curb pork shortages and outlines anti inflation campaigns and new rules for automotive repairs starting Sept. 1.
Milford postpones the dedication of its War Memorial Park at Main and Sycamore Streets from August 26 to October due to project delays. Benches have been installed and walks, marker, and entrance archway are near completion. Council seeks lighting cost estimates from Cincinnati Gas and Electric. Public subscriptions totaled over $2,000 to fund the village project.

The Milford village council awarded a contract to Walter F. Manion of Cincinnati to survey a postwar sewer system and waterworks extensions. The study, funded by a contingent fee and a Federal Works Agency loan, aims to design a sanitary and storm sewer network and potential reservoir capacity upgrades. Manion begins the survey in early fall.
Clermont voters will decide seven tax levies in November split among village and school district needs. Neville seeks 12 mills above the base 10 for an electric light system, Amelia and Bethel also request higher operating expenses, while Bethel Tate Amelia Branch Hill and Jackson Township school levies cover additional funding. Mayoral races appear in Milford Williamsburg New Richmond with most other local offices up for election unopposed.
The Batavia Community Band under Mr P F Jamieson is engaged to play at the Owensville Fair with performances in the afternoons and evenings. There will be no Batavia band concert on Friday evening August 17.

Milford residents and kin spanning Milford High School to Miami University are highlighted for wartime service. Charles Koogler returns home on convalescent furlough from Las Vegas New Mexico, while Sgt John L Taylor Jr and Pfc Charles J Guilday serve overseas. Captain Charles F Payne earns the Bronze Star in Europe. Other relatives including Jack Koetter and Bob Gilfillen receive assignments and recalls from military duty, with details of units, locations, and medals.
Village leaders and a shoe company discussed locating a factory here focusing on labor supply and a suitable building. Officials urged women ages 18 to 60 to register for jobs and potential wages as plans move forward with Metzger coordinating meetings with the company today.
Pic Harrison Wilson of Route 3 Loveland Ohio served with the Old Hickory division in Europe. The 30th Division landed on D plus 4 and spearheaded the St Lo breakthrough, crossed France Belgium and Holland, breached the Siegfried Line, and reached the Elbe after crossing the Rhine. He earned a Combat Badge ETO Ribbon with four Battle Stars and a Presidential Citation.
Dr. James G. Spence resigns from Selective Service Board One effective July 31 citing poor health. He has already left for a seaside retreat and plans to make his permanent home there.
The regular monthly meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is set for Thursday August 23 at the usual time in the Armory. Local members are reminded to attend and discuss post activities and plans.
Rumor says an astonishing method will light all French roads via iron wires and electromagnetic machines. Experiments on the Paris to Havre route reportedly succeeded, promising brighter streets and greater safety, surpassing gas light.
