Boiler explosion wrecks U S government boat at Dam 34
About 12 o clock Friday the 11th the boiler on Derrick Boat No. 10 exploded at Dam 34 Chile Ohio. The blast hurled the boiler 40 feet up and 150 feet east into the river. Five men were badly hurt, others lightly injured. doctors and nurses treated the injured and the site was turned into a temporary hospital. The cause remains unknown. The government and National Contract Co. crews are mobilizing hundreds of workers to continue the project.

Tax Question Carries in Batavia August Vote
The August 8 ballot in Batavia carried by 64 majority to exempt the interest and sinking fund from tax limits. The sinking fund has struggled to meet bonds and interest due yearly, prompting the measure and now the auditor will raise the levy to cover all debts.

George Bernstein, a farmer above Batavia, suffers heavy losses as rats kill his flock. He had used poison, then cats died after eating poisoned rats, leaving rats and young rodents overrunning the place. A den of pole cats under the barn aided the rodents, leaving Bernstein with few chickens and no cats.

Chas. C. Kearns received the largest primary majority to date and led in Clermont Adams Brown Highland and Pike counties. In Amelia he carried 56 votes, all of them, with 219 total cast and nine losses. Clermont saw 265 votes lost out of 1,007. Olive Branch defeated Glenwood 6 to 4 in a crowded Sunday game.
