Water fears linger at CECOS toxic landfill site
Preliminary tests show minimal groundwater contamination at the CECOS International landfill in Jackson Township but Williamsburg mayor Roger Mahan and Clermont County Hazardous Wastes committee remain unhappy. They cite concerns about surface water containment and the cause of the problem. CECOS began accepting only non hazardous wastes on August 14 after Ohio EPA lifted shutdown orders dating to May 8. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction extends Clermont County’s temporary jail permit from July 1, 1985 to March 1, 1986. Jill D. Goldhart notes three conditions, with the third limiting use after July 1, 1985, and says the 128 bed jail opening in 1986 justifies the extension. Construction of the new jail proceeds with Steinkamp & Nordloh reporting schedule adherence. Sheet Metal Workers Local 141 strike began July 29, halting work briefly amid cross picket tensions.
