Batavia Schools Set to Open September 8

Batavia Public Schools begin on Monday September 8 with an open house on Sunday September 7. A new flag donated by the Weaver Post of the Legion will be dedicated and refreshments served by the PTA. Parents must show immunization evidence for entering students. exceptions made if vaccination occurred earlier.

Youth Drowns In Little Miami River Near Batavia

Henry Whitt Jr. 19, son of Henry Whitt Sr. and Mrs. Whitt of Olive Branch, drowned early Sunday in the Little Miami River near Batavia after feeling ill. John Retzler 21 and George Crume 22 of Glen Este were his companions. his body was recovered later. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home in Bata via. He is survived by two sisters Irene and Lillian and two brothers Ralph and Milford.

Street repairs completed in Batavia, says mayor

Batavia streets repaired after three weeks of work. Mayor A. C. Munden reports all damaged areas filled with black top and alleys improved, improving overall conditions. State highways through the village to be repaired by the state.

Accident Claims Life of Fay First at Rapps Corner

Fay First of West Union was killed in a two vehicle crash on Route 125 at Rapps Corner about 9 30 p m Tuesday. John McNoon, the other occupant, was injured. First's body was taken to Kennedy Funeral Home Bethel. McNoon received treatment from Dr A A Gruber Bethel. State Highway Patrol investigated and County Coroner Dr Allan Rapp responded.

Rice Cafe Reopens After Extensive Remodeling

Rice reopens his cafe on Main Street Batavia after interior remodeling and added storage rooms. The store now appears modern with attractive color fixtures while Mr. Rice and his family have long operated in Batavia. A Clermont County Fair crowd filled the grandstand as harness races and a horse show begin with daily features and a Friday grand parade.

Former employees of the Cincinnati Georgetown and Portsmouth Railway to meet August 24 at 10 a.m. for a picnic at Brown County Fairgrounds in Clermont County to recall old times. All former railroad workers are invited to attend.

135 Year Old Barn Destroyed by Lightning

A 135 year old log barn on the Ohio Gravel Co farm at Camp Dennison burned last Wednesday afternoon after a lightning strike during a storm. Wilbur and Henry Myers, who till the farm, had just left minutes before. Firefighters from Miamiville, led by Chief Frank Wiederhold, faced heavy flames and used 1500 feet of hose but prevented the blaze from reaching a nearby corncrib. Loss estimate not available.

Livestock Emphasized at County Junior Fair Program

The County Fair adds focus to the livestock phase of the Junior Fair with a full day of judging on Thursday August 14. Ber man Ross of Warren County will judge 4-H livestock entries and showmanship in swine beef sheep and dairy with awards from breed associations. An improved swine project and a pig club at Milford aims to boost interest and support a swine sale on Friday August 15 around 3 00 p.m. The livestock tent serves as headquarters for 4-H demonstrations on prevention and control of pests and diseases.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon August 10 at Taft's Funeral Home Loveland for Mrs Jennie Turner Lever 73 wife of Dr Frank H Lever a Clermont Hamilton and Warren County physician She died August 7 after months of illness Born July 21 1874 in Loveland she was daughter of Nathaniel Porter Turner and Sarah Burgess Turner Married June 26 1902 in Loveland she was a longtime member of Loveland Presbyterian Church and active in local clubs She collected antiques and was an authority on Loveland history Survived by husband four children and five grandchildren Burial followed at Miamiville Cemetery

Tragic Pt Pleasant Murder Suicide Involving Sharp Family

Barbara Jean Sharp, 4 percent, and another family member were found murdered at their home in Pt Pleasant. A note alleged Sharp would kill himself with a 22 caliber rifle borrowed earlier. Dr. Allan Rapp and Deputy Marvin Bissantz investigated to confirm identity while Sharp’s De Soto car was located.

Dorsey Plans Modern Self-Service Grocery Opening

Robert Dorsey, former Kroger manager, has purchased the Applegate property on Main Street Batavia and will open a modern self service grocery and meat market. Remodeling will create a 40 by 60 foot storeroom and a five room upstairs apartment with lockers. Dorsey served 18 months in the Navy during World War I in the South Pacific.
