A coal car from the Jerky on C. G. & P. plunges down Duckwalk hill when brakes fail. The motorman and conductor push the car free, release the coupling, and dump the coal beside the track near the N. & W. line to avert disaster. No lives lost.
Highland Park Chautauqua closed after an eight day session of education and recreation. Evening programs drew larger crowds, the grounds offered boating and camping, and a mass meeting began efforts to make it a permanent yearly event at Highland Park with potential tie in to a teachers' institute.
Mayor Applegate's court lists twelve attachment notices against A. O. Johnson for sums from five to two hundred dollars for various supplies. Johnson is in parts unknown after allegedly removing about twenty thousand dollars from a Cincinnati bank where he was employed. Chattels slated for sale soon, but court costs will largely absorb sale receipts. A judgment is expected for most plaintiffs. A $250 reward is offered for his capture and return.
The feature is a Wednesday morning baseball game in Clermont between Batavia of the Spalding League and Milford of the Queen City League. First pitch at 10:80. Prizes of 40 dollars to the winner and 20 dollars to the loser. Races and amusements accompany the event.

In Batavia she witnessed city growth from sparse streets to electric lights and modern amenities. She remains active, memory sharp, and oversees family hearth duties and a traditional dinner. May she live to attend more such occasions.
The piece notes corn selling at 15 cents per dozen or more while two dozen would once cost the same, blaming supply and demand. It also reports gasoline at 18 cents per gallon with growing use from motor boats and cars, consuming more fuel than ever before.

Announcement invites two boys from each county aged 12 to 20 to attend the State Fair in Columbus this fall. Aug 26 31 dates given with court house selection in each county on Aug 17 at 10 am. Batavia township already has one applicant.
Milford forms the states first women gun club organized by six young ladies to learn target shooting for self protection. The group plans fall exhibitions and eventual field shooting for game with a marching chant likely to accompany outings.
In Perintown a fierce dog fight erupts when four large bull dogs maul a neighbor’s house dog after a wagon incident. George Thomas shoots one of the attackers dead, vowing vengeance, and calls for chaining dangerous dogs for public safety.
Amelia public schools open Tuesday September 8 1912 with a capable teacher corps and a high standard promised. The board urges parents to provide pupils with books so classes start smoothly. The high school is noted as first rate and the education board asks cooperation for a successful year.
Mowrystown man Mose Hunter narrowly escaped death when his clothing caught in a flour mill shaft turning 200 revolutions per minute. He suffered a broken left arm in three places and severe bruises. doctors from Sardinia treated him and he is recovering in bandages, planning to return to work soon.
At Highland Park Chau tauqua last Wednesday Democrats outnumbered Republicans four to one. Republican candidate Prof. D. Fess faced James Cox Timothy Hogan James Tarbell and H L Nichols who spoke on current topics and constitutional amendments to be voted September 3. Fess delivered a slow steady speech and impressed the crowd with his arguments, earning praise as the man the people want for their congressman.
Bootleggers operating a land office for moist goods near Ft Ancient during Company K's stay were brought before Mayor Stubbs in Lebanon. All but one pleaded guilty and received a $50 fine plus costs, with payment extended to October 1. Henry Murphy also pled guilty to drunkenness and was fined $5 and costs. Authorities credited for clever law enforcement.
A group of about 20 campers from Batavia attended the Highland Park Chautauqua this year. Mrs Grace Kranz led the group of girls while Mrs G F Baum supervised the boys and youths. The campers had a delightful week and broke camp on Monday reluctantly.
Raymond Nash once of this place was arrested in Cincinnati for bigamy and moved to Brooksville Kentucky for trial. A former employee of Johnson Marble Works, he first wed Miss Mary Wehram, who obtained a divorce after he deserted her. He then married an Illinois woman with two children, deserted her, and married a girl in Indiana, triggering further arrest. The account ends with a harsh editorial verdict that no penalty is too severe for a man who deserts his wife and children.
Fred Ungelham near Elk Lick reports harvesting three acres of bottom land yielding 12 loads of fine timothy hay that will cure out 10 tons of superb timothy. The crop stood four feet high with no weeds and could push prices lower. Rain last Friday greatly aided the corn crop in the area. Also notes advice on purification and longevity with Bu Bitters.
