The Batavia school board to voters a $28000 pond issue to finance a six room school with auditorium on the west side grounds. The plan aims to secure a county normal school. election likely in September. A sanitary cess pool will be installed.

A Batavian company seeks to supply electric current to the town at 3 cents per kilowatt via a new plant at High Lands Park, independent from the railroad system. They propose a ten year franchise with option to transfer at cost, keep existing plant in service, and use current for water pumping as well. If unsatisfactory, the town may revert to its present plant. the deal aims to reduce coal use and labor. A referendum period and petition process are outlined, with details on meters and financials.
On August 4 1915 at the M E Parsonage Robert Otten of Neville wed Bertie Rice of Chile in a ceremony led by Rev Burdeau with both fathers as witnesses. After a Batavia Hotel dinner they returned home near Neville. On August 7 Harr Craig and Electa Coleman of Williamsburg married and began housekeeping in a well furnished home with Harold Spencer of Chillicothe as witness.
The M. E. Sunday school will enjoy its annual picnic on Thursday August 12 at the grounds above the mill. Meet at the church at 1 30 p m. All church and congregation invited. Bring well filled baskets for evening lunch. Henry Reynolds superintendent BR Bardsall pastor.
Mr and Mrs E B Holmes returned from Lake Winona to be guests of E B Rush and family. The Bachelor Girls Club surprised them with a social evening. The note mentions future marriages and growing membership. They plan to move to housekeeping in Williamsburg.
The Laurel Grange completed its organization on August 2 with 87 charter members and about 100 attendees. Harvey Perin led two degrees from Amelia Grange, followed by a celebratory ice cream and cake treat for patrons. Bethel Grange hosts a picnic August 14 at Crane's Grove. Mt. Carmel Grange awarded 8th and 4th degrees to 12 new members August 7 with ice cream and cake.
Camp Talcum on the East Fork near the McAfee residence hosted Camp Fire girls from Batavia for a ten day outing ending last Wednesday. Capt Bechtel lent two tents for weather protection and cooking. girls worked in pairs for tasks like cooking and carrying water. The week featured bathing fishing and games with Mrs Dollie Baum and Miss Shirley Griffith as chaperones. Attendees included Harriet Radcliffe Gladys Aichholtz Margaret Bradley Geane Smyth Miriam Stephens Minnie Brothers Harriet Kain Pauline VanHorn Ruth Coyle Laura Hauck Francis Hulick Margaret Nichols Wilma Brown.
George W. McNair died at his Nicholsville home on August 2 at age 60. A lifelong Monroe township resident he was highly respected. Funeral services were held at Nicholsville Presbyterian Church on Thursday.
On August 1 a new law lets a man reuse old auto tags on a new car by sending a transfer certificate for 1.00 to the Secretary of State, down from the previous 5.00. The notice warns boys to watch for the dollars.
The son of William Roudebush was badly burned last week when his breakfast plate tipped onto his neck and chest at Woodland Park. He is a grandson of W. F. Roudebush of this place and is recovering well.
A Batavian party led by Louis Buerkle and including Lloyd Hulick Karl Hoerner Fred Radcliff and others had its annual fish fry on the Ohio river banks above New Richmond last Wednesday. They traveled by auto and the fish seller charged five dollars for ready to eat portions. The group enjoyed a fine time and noted the feast as a rare appetite satisfying event.
Last week the lumber from the East Fork section of the South Milford Bridge was offered to Jordan and Laub if they removed the iron and turned it over to the county. They accepted and now have men at work. Several thousand feet may be saved for buildings and repair tasks.
Captain Bechtel leads 600 Bright young men of Company K out on Monday morning for an eight day outing at Camp Willis near Yellow Springs. They are fully equipped and will undergo field maneuvers, drilling, and camp life duties with meals and care provided. The roster lists officers, sergeants, corporals and privates including W.S. Bechtel Captain J.B. Scott and J. Campbell First Lieutenants John Guenther and others along with numerous enlisted men.
County commissioners met August 2 and approved numerous bills for pike repair, bridge work, lumber, and supplies. Contracts awarded include Cedron Bridge to Rochester Bridge Co for 789 and Tate township to Rodney Jenks for slush and concrete. Bonds and state joint culverts also approved with future bids planned August 16.
About 300 employees and families joined the second annual picnic at Lake Allyn on August 5. Activities included dancing and boating, with ice cream and lemonade. the shop and office force defeated the trainmen 7 to 0 in a ball game. Stanley Wester tallied 23 strikeouts. The event expresses company care for workers and is eagerly anticipated each year.

The dedication on August 7 will be attended by Hon. 8. D. Fess delivering the address. Preparations are underway by neighbors for what is described as a highly important event.
Owensville plans to illuminate the town using current from the Swing Traction line. The village will issue bonds to fund the light equipment, with sale notices to appear in this week’s issue. The lights may enable evening fairs and night sessions in the future.
Last Saturday Batavia nine defeated Boston boys 8 to 5 on school grounds. Players ranged from 10 to 20 years with Gaul as catcher and Roudebush pitching for Owensville, Ashburn pitcher, Reed Seyler and Graver as Batavia catchers. Small crowd watched as Batavia took early lead. next Saturday the Boy Scouts face Fast Banner Boys of Cincinnati at 2:30 on the same grounds.

The State Highway Commissioner awarded contracts last Saturday for Batavia and Cincinnati pike to Lewis & Co. of Cincinnati and Cincinnati and Chillicothe pike to Van Camp Bros. of Newtonville. Work to begin at once.
Sunday a gasoline spill on a lit stove at Elliott Davis home in Batavia caused flames to engulf the kitchen. Mrs. Davis suffered burns to hands and arms but the fire was quickly controlled. The incident warns against filling a tank on a lit gasoline stove. It was the second scare at the residence in a week.
John Zurmuhle and Miss Clara Ginther both Batavians were married Saturday at the U B parsonage by Rev. Wegner. Mr Zurmuhle had a home prepared for his bride where they now reside and entertain many friends. The Courier extends best wishes.
About six hundred people gathered last Saturday night for the corner stone laying of the new schoolhouse. Addresses were delivered by Hon. C. C. Kearns County Superintendent Aultman and Rev. George of Williamsburg. The Junior Order oversaw the ceremonies and Milford band provided music. The event was one of Newtonsville’s largest gatherings.
The Modern Woodmen of Mt. Pisgah held its annual fish fry at the Lillick farm last Saturday with about 600 attendees from across the district. A basket dinner and plentiful fish provided by the order filled the day, and guests enjoyed a lively social gathering despite full stomachs.
News from Batavia reports Arch Keen's baby boy, under two years old, sustained several severe burns when a lighted gasoline torch used to repair a car tire toppled onto him. The infant is not believed to be fatally hurt and is currently progressing well.
The county fair highlights include a large premium list for exhibitors with strong prizes in cattle swine sheep and poultry. Horses are on grounds with a robust racing program and several well stocked show rings. Visitors are urged to attend and enjoy fruits vegetables and social gatherings during the event.
The annual G A R encampment concluded at the Boston fair grounds last Thursday with many veterans in attendance, though fewer members answered roll call each year. Officers elected were D F Lady as commander, E B Scott as assistant, and Tom Moorehead as officer of the day.
Milford high school gains H. 8. Hamilton of Winchester to replace Prof. Clark as district superintendent hires. Miss Elizabeth Hill resigns from seventh grade to return to college. Starting pay for first year teachers rises from 45 to 60 dollars per month. Schools open September 7 with Labor Day on the 6th.
Announcement that the August teachers examination will move from Batavia to New Richmond on August 27 to accommodate applicants. Also notes a public meeting at Favrer's hall Owensville on August 4 at 8 pm with speaker Chas Needham. protest against the Ohio Constitutional Stability League. admission free.
