The first call under the selective draft will include 290 names drawn in the county. The list is split into three groups for examination. First group examined Thursday August ninth, second on Friday August tenth, third on Saturday August eleventh, with names supplied by the County Draft Board.
John Dumford of Clover neighborhood was severely injured when a loaded wagon ladder broke. He fell between the horses and beneath the wheels, with two passing over his chest. Early reports feared fatal injuries, but he is now improving. It is cited as a miracle his life was spared.
Mrs Viola Weaver Rust, known to locals as Miss Viola Weaver, died at her Summerside home after a long illness aged 72. Her husband, in poor health, survives her. Funeral from the residence Monday at 2 PM, burial in Union Cemetery at Batavia.
A clear call urges greater Red Cross support as needs surge worldwide. It praises the six base hospital units sent to Europe, notes doctors and nurses leaving homes to aid allies, and asks each Red Cross chapter in Clermont County to recruit members and raise funds to sustain medical aid and supplies.
The Columbus unit reports 548 wristlets 880 scarfs 301 sweaters 17 helmets, totaling 1241 articles. Other state units are also performing well with good results and active work.
Miss Olive Marshall of Batavian married Frank Lynch of Cincinnati last Monday at 2 30 in the afternoon. Attending were Guy Craver Miss Wilma Brown and James Brown and Mrs Francis Marshall. Friends extend best wishes for happiness.
Teachers from Clermont converge on Milford for a week long institute. Dr. T. B. Lowden delivers engaging lectures on lifelong learning and river meanings. The Oxford Operatic Co. performs as a feature, while a grand reception seals the opening.

Director Thorne Mr Buss and Marion County Superintendent Riegle will attend with Clermont County Supt Aultman in the afternoon. Mrs Willison from the State University led a Friday afternoon demonstration at the school building under the Batavia Woman's Club. She explained modern canning methods for blackberries corn beans Swiss chard rhubarb cauliflower and more and shared practical tips and valuables with the attendees.
An auxiliary of the Clermont County Red Cross was organized at Bethel with officers Harry Dillman chairing, Winifred Davis as vice chair, Lawrence McNair secretary, and O L Page treasurer. Bethel Tate Township membership stands at 750. Edith South offers her Plain Street brick house for sewing and other work. A fundraising committee plans home relief work aided by gifts including a Shetland pony from J C Scott and Harry Dillman and a Holstein calf from Dr Geil and G G Bambach. Citizens urged to join or donate a dollar to boost Clermont County.
Crop condition reports indicate serious issues in parts with wheat rye and oats harvested and threshed. Wheat brings 2.25 to 2.47 dollars per bushel, tobacco a half crop, corn and pasture needing rain, hay averaging 16 dollars per ton, blackberries scarce, potatoes cut short by drought selling at 50 cents per peck. Producers await better prices.
Edenton Newtonsville and Belfast plan a union silver medal contest at Edenton M E Church on Saturday evening August 11 1917. Program includes devotional reading music and readings by local participants with a wartime patriotic and community tone.
The notice invites schools to attend a celebration at Simmons Grove Laurel Ohio on August 11 1917 with morning and afternoon speakers. Music includes vocal and band performances and organizers promise a good time and participation.
In Clermont County the Third District drafting area will begin examination on Thursday morning and continue until 290 men summoned to Batavia are examined. Exemption blanks and affidavits will be provided at examination and must be filed within 10 days. The county official quota is 161, revised from 145, and processing will proceed rapidly.
Robert Marchant aged 73 fell from a water wagon near Monterey last Monday as he drove it. Wheels passed over him and he died soon after from injuries. He had joined a thrashing outfit near Monterey to earn a living. He lies survived by a wife and two sisters. Burial is planned for Wednesday.
Batavia Electric Light and Power Company stockholders met at the county court house to consider a railroad backed plan to pay for current on a sliding scale. The town would receive power at a set price with about 3000 dollars in stock subscribed and more Batavians urged to buy ten dollar shares to broaden ownership. If the town plant remains under coal price pressures the rate may double. the directors ordered machinery purchases to be installed before fall and urged residents to buy stock to secure old rates for light and water.
At Amelia town hall on Saturday evening August 18 the Batavia orchestra led by P. F. Jamieson performs a varied program. Miss Grace Doughty accompanies a one act play Dr Tinker's Toy Shop followed by a pantomime The Frolic of the Season. Do not miss.
The Roude bush family and connections announce their annual reunion for Saturday August 18 1917 at Woodland Park. Attendees are urged to bring baskets with dinner and join the county outing at a noted park site.
The Clermont County G A R Encampment at the Boston fair grounds last Thursday drew a well attended crowd. The program pleased attendees and a similar turnout is expected next year at Highland Park. Newly elected officers include W B Eppert commander Jeff Doughman S V J B Sentman chaplain J F Stall quarter master E B Holmes officer of the day.
The contract to furnish and install a steam heating plant for the jail and residence was awarded to N B Denning for $1878 after a single bid. The project must be completed with zero weather conditions.
Miss Hilda Creager a prospective Paxton teacher and summer normal attendee drowned while swimming with Miss Lillie Swanson in the Little Miami river near Loveland. Several children witnessed the drowning as Creager could not be revived after her depth exceeded. Her funeral was held Tuesday at the Swanson home.
The Boston Fair runs August 21 to 24 with improved grounds and new buildings. Purses are attractive, entries rise, and exhibits from county schools draw attention. Boys compete in pig growing, girls in domestic science. information available from secretary J. E. Christy of Owensville, Ohio.

The new law eliminates delinquent sales and final forfeiture for unpaid taxes. It imposes an eight percent annual interest on overdue taxes for four years, after which the county treasurer may sue the owner for back taxes and interest. The change affects professional tax bidders from major cities and may appear on December tax receipts.
Near Mt. Carmel residents reported the death of 74 year old Henry Klattie found hanged in his barn last Friday afternoon. He had been to town that morning and nothing seemed amiss. A year earlier his wife hanged herself in the orchard. some link the act to his son’s draft status. Klattie owned a fine farm and supported several sons.
