A research group cites that 20,000,000 American homes have inefficient wiring. More churches of all sizes are being air conditioned each year as dentists report that cooling helps patients relax.
The Better Business Bureau warns homeowners that claims an air conditioner size will cool a set space are misleading. A proper unit depends on heat load factors like weather, sun exposure, insulation, shade, occupants, appliance use, and cooking. The pamphlet advises a qualified salesman use a heat-load formula and warns against oversized units. It promotes a safe installer selection and ten rules for optimizing AC dollars.
If your home lacks a basement and uses a perimeter or overhead heating system, converting to all season cooling is feasible and economical. Add a cooling coil to the vertical furnace connected to an outside air cooled condensing unit to remove heat, with water cooled options offering low operating costs. For attic crawl space homes with horizontal heating, install a horizontal cooling coil in the ductwork at the furnace discharge linked to an outside air cooled unit that uses no water.
In 1952, 61.8 percent of New York City offices reported closing early at least one day due to heat, while air conditioned offices showed below-average absenteeism during heat waves. Early refrigerating machines, first powered by steam engines, were assembled at a factory then shipped disassembled for site reassembly.
