Two Fatal Accidents On North Western Line
News from Peebles reports two recent deaths of engine drivers on the North Western road. Samuel Carothers, a single man living with his mother, lay asleep on the tracks possibly from drink and was thrown 50 feet into a pond after he could not be stopped. Howard Shumake, 22, husband and father of a six month old, died after being struck near the same location while returning from a visit to his sister. Both men were highly regarded in their community.

Death by Own Action At Infirmary Involving Carbolic Acid
An elderly inmate at the infirmary Notty Hill 72 was found dead from carbolic acid after a struggle with mental distress and a prior remark he would refuse transfer. Post mortem found throat and stomach injuries from the poison. Relatives claimed the body and buried it in Goshen.
