Driver Dies of Heart Attack in Route 74 Crash

Ed Shannon 35 of Batavia died late Monday night from a heart attack while driving on State Route 74. His car veered into a ditch. investigators cite the heart attack as the cause of death not the injuries. He leaves a widow, two children, and two brothers.

Salvation Army Fund Drive Completed in Clermont County

The Salvation Army fund drive in Clermont County has ended with receipts totaling 1411.53 dollars. Mrs James Walker chaired the campaign and said donations remain accepted. Organizers note that the county campaign is now sole solicitation period and refer needy cases to the organization for assistance.

Mt. Pisgah Community Club, after losing its lease on Modern Woodmen Hall in a court action by Ray Haggard, has received a smaller building from the owner. Remodeling will begin soon to establish a new community meeting place.

Batavia Guard Company backs summer athletic program

Batavia Guard Company announces a planned Batavia Athletic Association to run inter community youth softball and baseball leagues for ages ten to fifteen with two kickoff meetings in the Batavia Armory on April 18 and 25. Senior leagues may form eight teams from Batavia Mt. Carmel Willowville and surrounding areas with lighting studies for night games and a two dollar family fee to cover equipment and facilities.

G I Show Opens Friday at Newtown School Auditorium

Marriott Haywood Post No 5967 VFW presents the prize winning G I show Rhapsody In Blue Serge at the Newtown School auditorium Friday and Saturday nights. The two hour production features three acts fourteen scenes and a male chorus line with burlesque and surprises. Written and directed by Howard Friedrich the show won first prize for comedy in the ETO competition in Paris after touring army camps in Europe. Proceeds fund a clubhouse for the post.

Neglect Charge Fines Farm Owner Near Owensville

Harry Steinnecker was fined 50 dollars and costs for neglecting animals on his farm near Owensville after Deputy Marvin Bissantz found dead sheep heifers and chickens on the property. A separate Clermont Common Pleas Court case awarded 162.28 to Howard L. Sams from a November auto accident. The Batavia Grange plans a regular meeting April 10 at 8 o’clock.

Florida Training Photo Shows Fritz Backscheider and Skipper

Fritz Backscheider of Olive Branch works his Apaloosa horse Skipper in Florida where he recovers from polio. He was the Clermont Junior Saddle Club president and active member, plans to bring Skipper home for the summer, and fellow members look forward to his return and trying the new horse.

Suit Filed to Recover Gold Mine Stock and Dividends

Three suits filed in Clermont and Hamilton Counties seek about 2.583 million from Judge John W. Haussermann and Benguet Consolidated Mining Company. Mrs. Idonah Slade Perkins alleges $83,000 in earnings on stock from 1942 to wartime closure and $2.5 million in damages. She also seeks 120,000 shares lost due to a Philippine divorce case and a $412,000 California dividend judgment.

Williamsburg VFW Hosts Fourth District Meeting

Williamsburg Post No. 4897 and Auxiliary will host the 4th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Sunday April 13. Eight counties including Adams Butler Clermont Clinton Brown Highland Hamilton and Warren will be represented. Officers from state and district VFW and Auxiliary will attend with lunch served in the school cafeteria. The afternoon session is open to the public with special music by the Melody Four and a parade led by the Kentucky Champion Drum Corps.

Clermont County reports a national telephone strike with public cooperation. Batavia exchange handled calls with six operators on two shifts, avoiding emergency measures. Also notes Eastern Star meeting and Pierce Township PTA chicken dinner to fund school lunch room.

Ruffner Named Commissioner in Clermont County

In a county reshuffle Sam Ausman resigns as Clermont County Commissioner to become Relief Director. Ernest H. Ruffner assistant in the Auditor’s office is appointed to the Board. Ausman served eight years. The relief post had no head for almost five years. The appointment occurred at a special Monday session with local officials present.

Missionary Carl Dille to Speak at Mt Holly Church
