Pioneer Laid To Rest In Batavia Home
The remains of Mrs. Elizabeth Leonard were brought to Batavia last Friday and taken to the Leonard home on Main Street. Funeral rites were held at the residence with Rev. Bailey of the M E Church officiating, burial in Inter Vention Union Cemetery. An early Batavia settler, she raised a family there while her husband worked as a blacksmith and wagon maker. She later lived in Indianapolis with a daughter for several years.

Flood and Fire Hit New Richmond Hard
Floods and a blaze struck New Richmond over a ten day span. The Robinson tobacco warehouse, one of the county’s largest, burned on April 3, destroying about 65,000 pounds of tobacco, packing gear, and machinery with losses estimated at 15 000 to 20 000. insurance unclear. The tobacco belonged to Mr Bushman, valued at 9 000 and insured for 6 000. the building owned by Harry Hofman, and a large amount of C. W. Bickmore’s furniture also perished, with Mr Bickmore’s loss around 30 000. Firemen saved adjoining structures. Joseph Schenz suffered serious burns.

Damages totaling 5000 were awarded in Adams county common pleas against the C I W railroad for loss of a foot by a freight car. The judgment was reversed on appeal for rehearing.
