The Cincinnati Post contests the 14 to 8 House Judiciary Committee vote that killed a bill to regulate gas electricity and phone rates. It notes lobbyist influence and cites Rep Bettman’s absence and the two Hamilton County lawmakers voting no as evidence of a sham battle.

Burke Named Chief of Naval Operations Over Reports
President Eisenhower promoted Rear Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, leader of the 1949 revolt, to Chief of Naval Operations placing him on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The move surprised many Washington observers who questioned unification policy and noted Burke’s opposition to the Air Force B 36 program. Burke’s elevation may strengthen Admiral Radford, who has backed him, while the reappointment of Admiral Carney drew controversy. Burke, in playful reply, said he never golfed with the President.

CIO Opposes Fulbright Bill to Change Natural Gas Act
The CIO testified before the Senate on S. 1853 saying the change would raise consumer costs by up to 800 million dollars annually and drive broader price increases in fuel oil and electricity. It would also boost natural gas reserves value by up to 30 billion dollars, largely owned by big oil firms, and erode investments in home gas heating equipment.
