Lorain County earns 489,748 from a federal grant to hire two deputies for three years. The department also plans to bring back three laid‑off deputies as budget savings allow, increasing road patrol to 20, plus a sixth deputy funded separately to monitor sex offenses.
Lorain Education Association and Board of Education agreed to a one-year wage freeze and a 10 percent cut in extracurricular payments to save about $2 million. President David Wood said about 94 percent of the roughly 300 voters supported the concessions as a levy vote loomed.
The Ohio Democratic Party filed a suit with the Ohio Supreme Court challenging a last minute redistricting maneuver that added funding for county election boards to the bill chairing the map shield from ballot challenges. The suit questions legality of lawmakers action as the bill neared approval and cites constitutional immunity for state spending. The court previously allowed a challenge in 2009 to a different state plan despite similar procedural steps.

In Amherst a noon report of a liquor bottle in a paper bag triggered a call to the Lorain County bomb squad. Officers cordoned the area and evacuated the plaza while Lt. Dan Jasinski and Capt. Dennis Seger investigated. The bottle was alcohol and the scene was deemed harmless.
Delays in completing Elyria High School's new 16,000 square foot gym may shift more than one basketball game including the Lorain County Holiday Classic. Construction ops manager Kevin Wise cites about a month added to the timetable. A hard completion date is roughly a week away with wood flooring arriving by week’s end.
North Ridgeville resident Charles Yankings, 30, suspected of slitting Lynne Beardsley in a Cleveland apartment, was arrested in Arcata California and held in Humboldt County Jail facing aggravated murder charges while awaiting extradition. He has prior convictions for assault theft and disorderly conduct.
