A special six member Senate committee unanimously recommended censure of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy for contempt of the Senate and for abusing an Army general. The Senate is recalled to session on November 8 to consider the committee's findings.
A nine day committee review Aug 31 to Sept 13 faulted McCarthy on three counts while urging censure on two. Witness Richard Finley testified to illegal bombings and bribes via Shaker Trucking checks. testimony touched on motives and ties to Teamsters officials amid broader racketeering probes.
The report notes a Senate Finance Committee vote to censure Senator McCarthy for contemptuous conduct toward the elections subcommittee and the Senate. It quotes the committee labeling his actions as reprehensible and recommends procedural rule changes prompted by Sen. Prescott Bush.
The first bus carried 10 pupils, the next three, with typical bus capacity about 49. Two state troopers and ten Milford policemen patrolled the area as about 60 residents gathered for school opening. A Sunday rally of 3,000 led by the Imperial League? was led by Bryant Bowles.
Three members of a Delta Ohio family died in a two car crash at the Angola Road and Fulton Lucas county roads intersection. Jacob Garman 31 his wife and their young daughter were killed on scene. A second child believed twin to the dead girl was injured. The collision involved a car driven by 72 year old William Casper of Swanton. Garman died at Toledo Hospital the mother and daughter died at the scene and were taken to Swanton Funeral Home. Casper suffered minor injuries.
The Ohio Turnpike Commission audit report raises serious questions and Lorain County ties. A Lorain County grand jury will convene tomorrow to study the implications and charges, with the paper urging prompt, thorough action despite political rhetoric.
Polio patients Dianna Lynn Edwards 7 of 228 Franklin Ave and Evelyn Rogers 33 of 192 Main St. remain in fair condition at Cleveland City Hospital after Friday admissions. Gerald Schubert, 3, moved to Gates Hospital for continued treatment as Lorain County reports 28 polio cases to date.

The Toya Maru ferry capsized in 118 mph winds, with 1,042 passengers and 111 crew aboard, as 1,000 plus perished in the fire and sinking. Americans aboard included Pfc. Frank Goedkin, Donald Orth, Dean Leeper, and T. M. West.
The Ohio grand jury opens to review alleged irregularities in Lorain County turnpike land purchases. County Prosecutor Paul Mikus asks State Auditor James A Rhodes for proof as the auditor’s office previously highlighted suspected improprieties. The probe focuses on five factors driving right of way costs toward seven million dollars over estimates.
Baltimore attorney and former labor leader James T. Roberts, jailed on charges tied to the kidnapping and murder of his seven year old daughter Judith Vann in Florida, was extradited after a Dade County court proceeding. Detectives escorted him to a awaiting car for transport to Miami, where the victim’s body was found last July. Roberts, addressing reporters earlier, denied involvement and claimed innocence. His wife accompanied him as he was released to state custody.
William A Holley, 62, former mayor of Sheffield Lake, seeks a new trial as his DWI conviction faces appeal before Municipal Judge LeFroy Kelly this afternoon. He was fined 200 dollars, costs, three days in jail, and a one year driving ban. attorney Walter Gordon represents him amid talks of a possible postponement.
The grand jury, excluding original actions, will review 61 cases involving 98 people as it sessions tomorrow with D. P. Self, Lorain Journal business manager, as foreman. Offenses total 31 types from non support to second degree murder. bound over is James Warmon of Elyria charged in the fatal beating of Emmett Tollett of Elyria.
