Ruling backs Ohio conference in Defiance church case

Van Wert County Common Pleas Judge Eugene R. McNeill ruled against St. Pauls Methodist Church officials and in favor of the Ohio Methodist Conference over church control. The 15 page decision says Rev. Robert W. Weaver, assigned by Bishop Hazen G. Werner, is rightful pastor and entitled to occupy the parsonage and church building. The ruling notes a Protestant church is based on protest, but urges respect for others’ rights to protest and says only the congregation can heal the split. Further action depends on the people involved as the injunction request aimed to bar interference with the pastor's duties.
