Lime yields boost wheat and clover when applied shallowly
Ohio researchers find lime timing matters at reduced rates. Best results come from incorporating carbonate lime to about two inches before sowing wheat or in rows with the seed. Shallow mixing doubles yield on average, while surface application or deeper plow mixing underperforms. Moderate acidity with limestone harrowed in increases following red clover yields.

Fall Planting of Evergreens Urged
September showers and early fall rains have put the soil in proper condition for fall planting of evergreens, notably pines spruces junipers and arborvitae. Ohio State Extension forestry specialist FL W Dean advises late summer or early fall planting to aid root growth before freezes and to reduce winter heaving with mulching of bases using well rotted manure peat moss or straw. Older evergreens stressed by drought or red spider can be rejuvenated by proper pruning next spring and fertilization with half a pound of fertilizer per plant.
