Washington reports the Administration nears a new monetary plan to reduce dollar uncertainty. The potential commodity dollar would keep purchasing power stable by adjusting metal content to reflect price levels, with a government index guiding commodity prices. The plan, still embryonic, aims to ease credit tightness as banks hesitate to lend amid policy volatility.
Three persons sustained minor injuries when a truck and an automobile collided on Route 20 west of here yesterday afternoon. Milton O. Baus, 40, of R. D. 2 Elyria, driving the truck, suffered minor injuries and bruises and was taken to Memorial Hospital. The automobile passengers were Mrs. J. W. Monson, 65, and Mrs. Ellen Spencer, 70, both of Niagara Falls Ontario. They were admitted for observation.
In Cury Oklahoma on September 27, Harvey J. Bailey and Albert Bates declined to testify as the Urschel kidnapping trial moved toward a conclusion. The pair rested their cases without defense after the Shannons and a Texas farmer group concluded their defense. Urschel, a billionaire victim, was seized in a sensational crime tied to a $200,000 ransom.

Akron pays tribute to Charles Landon Knight 66 longtime editor and publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal who died after years of illness. Knight, a former congressman and influential Republican, built a prolific newspaper career and counted Clarence Darrow among his friends. He was born in Georgia, trained as a lawyer, and turned to journalism after purchasing the Beacon Journal in 1904. Also reported is the sudden relapse and death of Elbert H. Baker 79 longtime Plain Dealer Publishing Co chairman following abdominal surgery. Baker helped shape Cleveland’s civic improvements and built the regional newspaper presence. He praised early Roosevelt actions lowering banking fear and convening Congress, saying the nation has regained confidence and unity, though more work remains.

A suit was filed in common pleas court by City Solicitor Howard Butler to enjoin the Ohio Public Service Company from charging alleged excess rates to commercial electric users and to refund all excess charges since September 1, 1931. The action follows a council resolution signed by Mayor W H Van Oster. Page 2 continues.
Tampico Mexico September 27 hunger and disease threatened the stricken city as relief work organized and bodies searched. Water and light suspended. Food and medical supplies urgently needed. Death toll 30 with more feared in flooded areas along the Panuco and Tamesi rivers. Mexico City prepared to send relief. American Consul Reginald Carey and Walter G Tschudin volunteered aid. none of about 1000 Americans in Tampico were reported injured. American Ward Line steamer Panuco blown aground.
Earl D. Bacon of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce addressed the Y Indus Club at the Y M C A on the NRA. He explained temporary versus permanent codes, noted most Elyria businesses operate under temporary codes, and said price regulations were not imposed by the NRA, with local unions setting any prices. The NRA aims to boost purchasing power and Bacon urged members to support giving it a fair chance.
Rains over the past week bring modest relief to Lorain County farmers after a very dry season. Potatoes, pasture and corn gain some benefit, with potato yields likely smaller than usual. Wheat seeding aided, fruit remains small though slightly helped, hay crops were poor, and dairymen may face higher feed costs. Overall, late-season rain offers cautious optimism for limited crops.

Washington reports Department of Justice agents recovered an additional 73,250 dollars of Urschel ransom money on a farm near Coleman Texas. J Edgar Hoover said a special unit was sent to Colemans farm where the stash was buried in a cotter patch. Coleman and Kelly relatives were involved in the case with prior recoveries noted in St Paul and on individuals Harvey Bailey and George A Bates.
James J. Elemes, WWI veteran, was unanimously elected 1934 commander of Elyria Post 12 American Legion, succeeding A T Sibley. Other officers elected include George Tattersall as first vice commander, E D Nielson as second, J M Marshall finance officer, H E Agate adjutant, Michael Cuprek sergeant at arms, and Paul Collins house committee. Sibley thanked members and urged support as plans were made for a Chicago convention trip on a 6 AM special train with 150 to 200 expected aboard. others may travel by car.
In Poughkeepsie on September 27 a Hudson River night liner rammed by Swedish freighter Boxems in thick fog endangered 150 passengers. Six injured. The Rensselaer, taking on water, escaped sinking and reached New York City under its own power with a large hole in the port side. Police report cites signal miscommunications as the cause.
American Legion posts and auxiliaries across Lorain County will hold a joint installation in Elyria on Tuesday October 3 1934 to install officers. The Lorain County Council will also install its new officers at the ceremony.
