The cease-fire follows days of clashes between Israeli backed Christian rightists and Palestinian Lebanese leftists, with hopes it paves the way for the Shtaura accord and Palestinian withdrawal. A small force of 800 soldiers and 80 armored personnel carriers stood by in Rayak to be deployed south, with Israel ensuring safety for Christians and keeping Palestinians away from the border.
