London dispatch reports expert neutral observers fear a quick German victory, while Britain and France plan a prolonged conflict. Allies bank on naval power, Maginot Line, and mass mobilization to pressure Germany. Civilian protections and industrial strength underpin a three year war.
Paris reports firm French belief that Germany will strike France via Switzerland or Holland, despite neutrality declarations. Massing German troops on the Swiss frontier and Swiss border actions are noted, with High Command reporting enemy artillery action southeast of Zweibruecken and several air combats on the 25th. a German patrol was repelled from a French farm in the Zweibruecken sector.
Mrs. Lynn Heinzerling, once of Elyria, and her son Lynn Jr. are reported safe in Copenhagen, Denmark after a hurried Berlin escape at war’s start. The couple's separation followed by a Berlin departure is noted in letters to her parents, William and Mrs. Dengate, with Heinzerling serving as European correspondent for the Associated Press and expected to reunite with his wife and son in Copenhagen.
The Weather Ohio reports cloudy skies with occasional showers tonight and Wednesday. Cooler in the southern area tonight. Disturbances centered over Louisiana, off the North Atlantic, and over Saskatchewan. High pressure over the Upper Lake Region and into Iowa and British Columbia. Precipitation fell across the South Atlantic and East Gulf states, Ontario, Quebec, the lower lake region, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California. Warmer conditions over the Atlantic states, Western Canada, and the Missouri Valley.
A KLM airliner arrived in Amsterdam from Copenhagen with its tail riddled by machine gun fire. A (unconfirmed) report said passenger Gustav Robert Lamm of Sweden was killed by bullets fired from a foreign aircraft near Esbjerg, Denmark, the plane believed German.
In Columbus Ohio Howard Miller forty one was wounded while hunting near Zanesville. He was treated for superficial wounds to the neck chest and arm by J W Fleming of Zanesville. In Warren a three year old boy William Green was shot on the first day of a squirrel hunting lesson while seated under a tree. He received shots to the face cheek and eye and was treated at Warren hospital.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain warned the nation to prepare for a long economic struggle to destroy Nazi war machines and defeat Hitler. He said quick results cannot be expected as Britain seizes 256,000 tons of contraband bound for Germany and pursues economic warfare while pursuing discussions with neutral powers. Churchill reported the convoy system in full operation and noted ships are armed against submarines. Britain has lost 141,000 tons of shipping so far, by week.
Addition of five more Elyria stores to the Treasure Hunt was announced today including Firestone Auto Supply F W Woolworth Neisner Brothers Hy Grade Dry Cleaning and S S Kresge. Twenty nine other stores were announced yesterday and prizes range from one to ten dollars for Chronicle Telegram readers matching yesterday’s numbers in the upper right corner. The treasure hunt runs through tomorrow and Thursday.
Berlin reports German troops have fought their way into the fringe of Warsaw after three weeks of siege. Mokotow district west of the city center is claimed captured in hand to hand fighting as battle operations resume amid fierce fighting in the suburbs.
Six year old Janet May Madok of 1049 East River Street was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 4 30 p m for contusions near the right eye and a facial abrasion after being struck by a passenger car near her home. The child had crossed to her father’s car and was returning to the curb when hit by the vehicle driven by an unidentified woman who stopped immediately.

The American Legion holds its annual parade on Michigan Boulevard with 250 000 Legionnaires Auxiliary members Gold Star mothers and relatives. The entire day is devoted to the parade and it will take about 15 hours to pass in review. The convention will state its neutrality stance before it closes, with 600 resolutions considered and about 25 touching neutrality. Some call for arms embargo others for cash and carry.
Neely Powers announces 36 captains and chairmen for the Keep Fyria Ahead campaign across seven business groups. Meeting at the Elyria Chamber of Commerce adopted a plural membership plan by unanimous vote. COLUMBUS Ohio September 26 State Treasurer Don H Ebright received a note from a Toledo old age pensioner enclosing his September pension check for 25 53 and stating he no longer needed state aid The writer whose name was withheld said his children could now care for him Ebright replied that if all citizens of Ohio were as conscientious there would be no state financial problem and ample funds to care for the needy
