Babson Park Mass September 26 Roger W Babson in a weekly interview says public lacks coal purchase demand despite a strike. He cites public immunity to fuel scares, limited strike scope and low money in workers’ pockets as reasons for tepid demand.
The article argues that credit tightening and wage issues slow coal purchases as winter ends. It notes strong unions in Illinois and Indiana, diminished mining in Ohio, and nonunion Virginia and Kentucky production. Oil increasingly substitutes coal with large on hand stocks and rising refinery output, while storage and future supply shapes prices. It remarks on securities tied to oil and coal, suggesting shifting to bonds when uncertain, and cites Babson chart near normal.
