Oaks Threatened By New Disease In Ohio Forests
Oak Wilt, a new disease to Ohio, endangers state forests and shade trees. An emergency appropriation of 15000 dollars was approved by the State Controlling Board for the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station at Wooster. A state committee of experts from multiple agencies will coordinate response and research. The disease, first seen in Wisconsin and later across the corn belt, reached Ohio in 1950 with confirmed cases in several counties. Oaks can make up 70 to 85 percent of commercial timber in many Ohio forests, heightening concern. Detection relies on aerial surveys and ground inspection, with samples sent to Wooster for lab analysis.

Grass-Legume Meadows Seen Cutting Milk Costs in Ohio
Ohio State University economist Elmer F Baumer led a 14th annual milk market conference session on boosting efficiency. Mt Gilead dairy farmer George Jackson described a farm system with 30 Jersey cows fed on 22 acres of grain and 11 of oats, plus 10 to 12 acres of bluegrass pasture and alfalfa mixed pasture. He uses meadow crop silage and hay with small amounts of low protein grain, relying on meadow silage and hay for protein. total animals on the farm listed as close to 60 head.

Make Mine Blue Pasturing and Feeding Costs Discussed
In 1930 a Morrow County farmer lime fertilized and mowed bluegrass pastures, later adding meadow pastures. Today he combines bluegrass and meadow pastures for the season. Dry weather silage and hay feed complement the pasture system. TD N figures show pasture yields 100 pounds TD N per 29 cents, alfalfa hay 100 pounds TD N per 49 cents, 66 bushels per 100 pounds TD N at $1.19, and corn 100 pounds TD N yielding 63 bushels at $1.29. The note ends with a line on sheep breeding for different fleece colors.
