Elyria police credit levy for crime drop and warn on renewal
Elyria's 1997 annual crime report shows serious crime fell 3.57 percent from 1996 as more officers and community policing take effect. Police Chief Michael Medders says sustaining gains relies on renewing a US income tax that funds the department, warning a loss could force layoffs of about a quarter of officers and cuts to programs like DARE and Neighborhood Impact Unit. Safety Director Timothy Coey adds that revoking the tax would trigger drastic budget cuts.
