54-year-old Hassel finds a gem in dusted 1942 Harley
COLUMBUS VPI Joe Hassel bought a dusty 1942 Harley-Davidson with a 61 cubic inch engine for 3000 dollars at a Tampa auction. He paid 4000 if sold next day. The motorcycle once belonged to Clark Gable who rode it in the Air Force storage in Florida. Hassel, a roofer, now restores and displays the bike at antique vehicle meets, winning the Wickman Memorial Award for restored motorcycles three years running. He keeps about 60 trophies and has a room added to his house to store the collection. The bike is special for its engine and Gable connection, though it cannot be judged in meets due to factory-era modifications.
